Root Someone who have tried higher than CM7.2 on HTC Desire?

Hello

I wonder if someone have tried higher versions of CM on their HTC Desire. Because the current stable version seems to be 7.2 with Android 2.3.7.

But now when im trying i notice some apps wont install on this android version. For example Google Earth..

Hmm, someone who have some experience of higher versions of CM or just Android 2.3.7 versions on the HTC Desire? CM10 for example. Does everything goes slower with the newer versions or are things fast enough?

CM7.2 was the last official CM release for the Desire. So where you see a ROM that calls itself CM10 or CM11 for the Desire what they mean is that some dev has built a ROM starting from CM sources, but without support from the CyanogenMod team.

I can't answer the question, partly because I've not tried any of these ROMs, and partly because it's unanswerable: one person's "fast enough" is another person's "too slow". In my final days with the Desire I did load Nikez's JB ROM (Evervolve sources) for the Desire, which worked "OK" by my judgement at the time but which was slower than dGB which I was using previously. I personally never found an ICS ROM which I counted as OK though, so this was progress. But "fast enough" is subjective, and depends on what your are used to: dGB was faster than CM7, and I think CM7 was probably faster than Evervolve JB, but there was about 18 months between my using those 2 ROMs (and I would fiddle with CM7 to make it lighter), so I can't be sure of that comparison.

Take a nandroid, try it, and if it doesn't work for you just restore the nandroid. It's the only way to be sure.

Aha, so it just to test and see how it goes? Hmm, is it possible to in some way damage the hardware or similar? :O I don't want that. ^^

Because here they warn others that do not have HTC Desire to be cautious while installing CM10 in their way:
Upgrade HTC Desire to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean with CyanogenMod 10 [How to Install]

I looked for CM10 here:
CyanogenMod Downloads

But all the CM10 versions seems to fit one specific Smartphone. Is there some general/common CM10 that might work on "all" devices?

On the IB-Times-link above they use CM10Evervolv_V1.zip
But it is some kind of Alpha-version. I might need a more stabler version i think. Someone who know a stable version?

And why should e.g. CM10 not work (if we guess that)? Is there some hardware drivers that are removed from the later CM10 or what is really the difference if we look at hardware compatiblity?

ALL Android ROMs are device specific. There is no generic build you can just put on any device, and there are no ROMs where the same build works on more than one model. Android always has to be built for the specific hardware.

You won't damage the device flashing a ROM, so it's safe to experiment. Just take a nand backup first, and only flash software built for this phone (i.e. the original Desire, aka Bravo, and not the Desire S, Desire HD, Desire C, Desire 300, Desire 600, etc, which are all different phones).

Oh, and when I say "Desire" I'm assuming you have the GSM model, rather than the CDMA version (BravoC, used on some North American networks). That needs different software too (though we do also discuss that model in this forum).

The plan was to run an up to date rom, same issues that you are getting. Apps no longer being created for older Gingerbread roms. There are issues but then there always have been with new roms on the old Desire. Nandroid your current rom, completely wipe phone (not SD card) and flash it from recovery. If you don't like it then restore your Nandroid, nothing lost.
