Song Association Game

I'm no musician, my mum and dad were, they used to be in a small band in the 1950s. Mum was a good pianist and dad was a good violinist. He was a piano tuner by trade so was good on the piano too. He really wanted me to be musical and paid me extra pocket money to learn the violin but it just wasn't for me. Sometimes, on reflection, I regret not pursuing it, at least with the piano rather than the violin.

I love my music otherwise, from the 1960's through to current. Not much interest in classical though.

I can appreciate the talent and musical skills of such and similar composers but their works do nothing for me and never have done.

For my 17th birthday in 1964, I had a Philips 4 track reel to reel tape recorder off my mum and dad, 7 days after the 'Radio Caroline' pirate radio ship anchored in Ramsay Bay, Isle-of-Man. At the time we lived right on the coast in a small village in North Wales, 70 miles away across open sea giving perfect reception on my also new transistor radio. I was also about to start work and could buy a reel of recording tape on a regular basis and I remember spending hours and hours mastering the fading in and out of the recording level to get damn near perfect recordings of the fantastic mid 1960s pop songs/tunes. I ended up with dozens of tape reels with all four tracks full of pop music.

My dad had a similar attitude to pop music as I had to classical, reluctantly recognising that some of the groups/artistes had a measure of talent but what they produced was not his 'cup of tea', more or less how I felt about classical music.

It remained the case until he died in 1997, just as it will for me, whenever that may be.
