"From A Jack To A King" - Ned Miller

Long ago I played in a predominantly country bar in West Hollywood Florida and while we were setting up our gear every week, and before we started, some guy used to play this on the juke box almost constantly. He must have had an endless supply of quarters.

I grew very tired of that song, but if I hear it now once in a while it brings back the good memories of gigging there.

We were "rock and roll' night on Mondays, which was a day off from our other gigs. There were hitching posts in front, the bartenders had a loaded 38 under each cash register, and the cook used throw a meat cleaver at the rats if they showed their face in the kitchen.

But the customers were very nice to us, there were plenty of colorful characters, the money was decent, and the rough crowd that prompted the guns under the cash registers didn't come by on Monday.

I was 18 years old at the time, and I didn't realize what a dive that place was. It was just a place to play music to an appreciative audience, and that's really all that mattered.
