Quadlibet for Tender Feet - Grateful Dead
Almath, this is regarding your song title:
IHMO the 1962 album of James Brown Live At The Apollo is the absolute best R&B live recording I've ever heard. There are a couple Apollo albums, but this is the one I mean:
This is James at the top of his game, before he had the vocal cord nodules, and when he could still sing his best. His control of the audience is also superb, and for the benefit of both the entertainer's experience and the audience's experience. And the "Lost Someone" cut displays a great artist doing what he did best. Listen to the song titles at the intro "Ladies and gentlemen it is star time ... ..." and then listen to him do things like insert a line of "Please Please Please" go on to another song, mix in a few more titles, teasing the audience with his biggest hits time and time again, creating the tension that when released by doing the song itself, creates an explosion of glee in the audience.
Plus I like these live versions much better than the studio versions.
If you like roots R&B, this album is a necessary addition, and if you are a performer, it's also a lesson from a master.
Did I gush enough? BTW, I wore out 3 LPs and now have it on CD.
PS, thanks Almath, I haven't played this one in a while, I think I'll put it on as soon as I get done typing
