Doc Pomus wrote the lyrics at his wedding reception. He had polio as a boy and couldn't dance (walked with crutches and eventually a wheelchair), so as he watched his bride Broadway actress/dancer Willi Burke dance at the reception, he had an idea for a song and jotted the lyrics down.
Later he got with his songwriting partner, Mort Shuman, they wrote this song and it was a hit.
It featured Ben E King on the lead vocals and was released shortly after he left the group to pursue his successful solo career.
