If you're looking for a decent Android smartphone with a smaller footprint, the Sony Xperia X Compact is now available on Amazon for $499. It may not be as cheap as a lot of other mid-range devices on the market, but it's front-facing stereo speakers, unique design and flagship-tier camera capabilities should make it's price-point more palatable.
