Help Sony Z1 Internal storage photo recovery

Something went wrong with sony bridge last night as i was importing pics from Sony Z1 to my mac and I lost a bunch of christmas and new years photos. I have use data rescue to check the SD card but the pictures were not there - they are located on the internal storage of the Z1, which I can't mount to my mac to check with data rescue. I have checked the DCIM folder it is now empty. Anyone come up with a recovery solution that does not involve rooting their phone?
 
Unfortunately, i haven't been using the memories app - worth considering in the future. Thanks for the suggestion.
