Help Sound issues, want to upgrade OS to fix

Lurker
Recently the sound on my Rogers Infuse 4g stopped working properly. I messed with the settings and volumes, and it magically started working again. A few days later, however, and the sound only works when I am using headphones. It seems to be a software thing.

I want to upgrade my OS to something better than 2.3.3 and see whether that fixes it. However, I don't want to have to reinstall all my contacts and apps. I also would like to back everything up before I make the upgrade so that if something goes wrong, I can at least go back to what I had. People suggest Titanium Backup, however it seems that only works if you have rooted your phone. Which I have not. Also, people say to backup your phone before you root it. How can you back up your phone before rooting it, if it needs to be rooted to back up?! I am frustrated.

Can anyone suggest what the best approach would be?

Titanium Backup is just one method of backing up your phone. You can do it the old school way and just drag and drop all of your photos and whatnot to your computer. Also, contacts should be automatically backed up if you have it set so that they are saved to your Google account instead of your phone.
