SPB shell permission and malware

I was about to download an app called SPB shell 3D but looking at the permissions tab it showed the app could potentially call numbers and send data out.

It is a bit worrying however I might of misunderstood. Can someone clarify what this actually means and what are the dangers if any?. Also is there any malware that can do this and rack up massive call and data charges ?

Quote from google play permissions tab for SPB shell

DIRECTLY CALL PHONE NUMBERS
Allows the app to call phone numbers without your intervention. This may result in unexpected charges or calls. Note that this doesn't allow the app to call emergency numbers. Malicious apps may cost you money by making calls without your confirmation.

Welcome to AF Martin! :)

Almost (if not) all of the 3rd Party Launchers available on the Play Store have that permission. It's needed so you can place direct dial short cuts for your contacts on your home screen.

It's nothing to worry about, but you were right to be concerned and it's a good idea to pay attention to app permissions before installing. If you fancy a read on permissions etc, take a look here: http://androidforums.com/android-ap...explained-security-tips-avoiding-malware.html

I have purchased SPB and it is fantastic. I am currently not using it because I like to switch up often, but it is really good for the I candy thing. Lots of really good widgets and lots of really nice looking animations.
