Speaker volume when speaking?

When on a call and I speak its pretty much mutes the other person. This is really confusing as I don't know if Im interrupting etc and sometime I talk whilst they are too. It makes for awkward conversations! I have tried Google but don't know what to search for!

I have a Sumsung Galaxy S phone. Is there a setting to stop it muting / decreasing the sound when speaking on a call?

its not whats happening on my phone. Did you buy it brand new?

Yes it was a new phone (although I have had it a long time). It doesn't mute them just makes them really quiet. So sometimes I will be talking and won't hear that they are talking at the same time.

Does anything know what this is called? Voice levelling, etc?
