Speakers

Anyone else really disappointed with them? The speakers on my htc desire hd are louder. And when you turn the volume up to maximum, the sound is distorted.

It's not a huge thing, but it's just annoying y'know

It is a little quiet. Not unbearably quiet.

I'm not noticing the distortion though.

Its more of a nuisance that notifications are quiet.

I'm not saying they (it) is good or bad, but as a matter of information, the Nexus 5 only has one speaker. There are two speaker grilles on the bottom of the phone. The left grille covers the speaker. The right grille covers the microphone.

I have to say the speaker is probably my only real disappointment with the phone. At the ripe old age of 48, I have been wearing hearing aids for about 15 years now. My previous phone was a Droid RAZR Maxx, and it was louder. When I saw the two grills on the bottom I was hoping that was two speakers and I'd have better sound. That's not the case, unfortunately, which means it can be a challenge for me to hear the speaker sometimes.

That said, switching off Verizon to StraightTalk will ultimately save me and my wife about $70/month, so I'm ok with a small sacrifice like this. I like the unbloated phone, and there's nothing else at this price that I'd want to use besides the N5.

I'm sure they will fix the sound distortion with the 4.4.1 update along with the slow camera shutter speed.

The best speaker so far are on the HTC One. On the nexus 5 they are still better than on the Nexus 4, which was horrible.

+ the nexus 5 no longer slide on desk to the ground like the Nexus 4 did :)

This makes me glad I didn't pick up a used N4 instead of the N5. :-)

You should be. Speaker quality is all relative. If I was coming from an iPhone or HTC one I'd be upset about the quality. Coming from an N4 I'm thrilled with the quality.

At home it is normally ok and I am using my battery powered bluetooth speaker (Logitech Mini Wireless Boombox) a lot of the time. But in the street I can hardly hear ringtones or OK Google..

I have this issue with my current HTC One X. So at least I won't be taking a hit. I got fairly used to it and now I usually hear it. Plus I like to have vibrate always on for texts and calls.

Google has acknowledged that there is a software issue with the speaker and that they are working on a fix.

Well isn't that nice. I was just a little disappointed at the poor speaker reports. I miss blasting music for me and everyone I was with to hear. If the Nex5 had beats audio, it would be my dream phone honestly.

The stock notifications and ringtones are a little quiet, but if you install custom sounds then they get much louder

Do people really use the external speakers to listen to music or watch a movie? If I were to do either one, I usually grab my head phones...

I like the portable speakers for playing music on the go with my friends or at work or road trips. But not for movies. I backed a project named Bongo on kickstarter which is bamboo bluetooth speaker like the beats pill. Unfortunately I didn't have the money by the time the project finished. But I'm gonna get one still, they're pretty cheap for the qualit, uunlike the beats pill.

No, but the other day when I wanted to show some friends a video on YouTube, people could hardly hear it.

If I'm using media on my phone, I pretty much always have headphones on, or it's connected to my car's stereo. But the speaker/volume issue for me lies with the ringtones and notifications. I am missing them because I never hear them. And I'm in my home. :(
So I'm super pleased to hear that Google has acknowledged the problem and is working on a fix.
