Speaking clock!

JBentleyR

After over two years of use, I have just noticed that the clock app on my Nexus 5 has started speaking the time to me every five minutes!
Granted, I usually have the volume turned off and set to buzzer, but have had the sound on as normal recently.
This is the standard clock app that came with the phone, version 4.6.1 (3299599).
I have looked in app settings and can find no way to turn off the voice notifications. Neither can I find anything in settings/sound/volumes.
Can someone please help and offer a solution as to how to turn it off?

Strange - Is this based on when the alarm is set? Or does it speak the time to you every 5 minutes, the entire day?
The stock clock app doesn't have this 'feature' - so look at any other apps that you may have installed recently.

Thanks for your help, JJ.

No, the alarm is not set and, yes, it would speak the time every five minutes.
However, in settings/sound/volumes, when I have 'alarms', 'ringtone and notifications' and 'music, video, etc.' all turned up full it speaks the time. I have since found that turning off 'music, video, games and other media', the speaking clock is now silent.
I haven't installed anything new recently but, looking at the apps, I found one called Talkback which I never use and thought that might be the culprit. However, when I looked at the settings it appears to be turned off. I was going to disable the app (I don't see an option to delete it), but I got the 'may cause other apps to misbehave' message.

Perhaps it's some other app, but none of them seem to be likely to speak the time. Still, I have turned off the 'music, video, etc.' sound setting and that, at least, stops the time announcements.

Are you running a custom ROM? I don't have my Nexus 5 with me at this time - but I don't recall volume levels for music/video - I just have media/alarm/ring (from what I remember)

Talkback is probably Google talkback - an accessibility service. I doubt that is causing this issue (especially if it is turned off)
Turning volume down to zero would be a bummer, but hearing the time being announced every 5 minutes would be super annoying!

Try booting your phone in safe mode - https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/2852139?hl=en - see if the problem persists. That will tell you if it is a Google stock app problem, or a third party app issue.

Thanks again, JJ.

No, not running a custom ROM. My phone is just as it was when I bought it, except for some additional apps I have installed since.

Under settings/sound/volumes, I have:
Music, video, games & other media (set to off)
Ringtone & notifications (set to full)
Alarms (set to full)
and these are what have always appeared since I first got the phone.

I can live happily with these settings. Actually, whenever I have wanted to listen to music or videos, I can't remember ever hearing the speaking clock. Perhaps it turns itself off when other things are being listened to.

Good advice about booting into safe mode. I'll try that later, although I can't imagine that it could be a stock app or everyone would have been asking about this before now!
