Spectrum on GSM?

Hi AF, been following these threads for a while now....just now decided to register. Have had my Spectrum since November when it was handed down to me, I had an HTC Thunderbolt before...and although the development on that device was huge, much MUCH larger than this one...lets face it, it's quite outdated. The Specs on the Spectrum were a no brainer to make me switch.

Since this is my first post, I do not want it to go without a special thanks to all Devs for the device (TDM, Neph, Azoller, Ortrigger, etc...sorry if I missed some important ones). It's guys like you that make having android devices fun.

With that being said, this might come through as quite a n00bish question, but I have seen some comments about it floating around in the past.

It was said that with the official VZW update to JB, the Spectrum would become active (don't know if correct terminology) to use on GSM Networks. I'm not sure if the recent JB update actually updated this or not, nor have I read up on it (Currently on CM10.1).

Has anyone actually looked into this, or was this just false info that was flying around?

tl;dr

is it possible to use the Spectrum on a GSM provider?

I figured that was the answer, but really didn't have much info to support my thoughts.

Thanks for the prompt response and the awesome work you do.

It can supposedly be unlocked for use on international carriers but it is not possible to sim-unlock the Spectrum for use on US GSM carriers.

Actually, do you know, or have any more info on the device being able to be used on GSM Carriers outside of the US....I have family in South America that can put this phone to use when I'm done with it.

Honestly, I don't think Verizon has unlocked that functionality. You could call them and ask though.
