Help Spectrum Time Issues

Hi,

My husband got his Spectrum 1 week ago.... We have been working thru the battery problems, not sure how much that is improving... maybe a little.

BUT the biggest issue is it is not keeping the correct time. He is actually at army annual training right now, and this morning he went to do something and found out he was 1/2 hour early (wrong time on phone). He has had issues all week. Not sure if he is on manual time or not. But he has to restart the phone and it might have correct time for awhile. Same problems when set to automatic time....

He NEEDS a reliable phone..... probably would NOT root (especially if there could be issues). I am NOT familiar with LG phones (I did have a versa way back when it was Verizon's top of the line - only a few years ago LOL) I am a Motorola fan.... I LOVED my Droid X and now my Razr. I know quite a bit about them (and no I have not compared screens yet - will have to try the netflix test.... LOL) But I doubt that I would switch phones.....

Any ideas on this problem???

Is the network time box checked in the settings menu? Because if it is it will use the network time settings which are pretty accurate.
 
it was checked at first - and that is when he had the first time issue.... I know that he has manually put in the correct time. I am not sure what it is set to now.... but it would be off 15 minutes etc....
 
There are apps available in the market that can set the phone's time using a few different methods. Time can be set using the time signal embedded in GPS signals, or it can be set using the Federal government's atomic clocks.

Some of these apps can be set to set your time manually and/or automatically. Most apps that set the time automatically require root access, though.

Just search for "atomic clock" or "GPS time."
 
The time is sync'd to 'network time', which is Verizon and 14 seconds faster than atomic time; THIS IS AN ISSUE FOR ALL VERIZON PHONES. Unfortunately, you have to be rooted to use another app to actually change the time... apps that claim to do so without root only revert in the event of huge shifts, like 30 minutes, but can't do much else.

The Spectrum's clock is wonky as shit too... it goes from -0.007 to 0.706 within a second and then back again.

If you can root, get ClockSync: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ru.org.amip.ClockSync&hl=en . You can set the app to sync to atomic time (or any domain name clock, like a military link for time, if you wish) and you can have it update every 15 minutes. I have the app and use it on all my phones. time.nist.gov is the main pool link which finds the best server, but there are more localized AND pure IP addresses for faster response (bypassing DNS servers): NIST Internet Time Service .

GPS time is OK, but it's not as accurate as internet time, because of latency between GPS satellites and the phone.
 
Cell phones are not a real good means of accurate timekeeping.

In my stint in the military I found that wrist watches were much more reliable than a cell phone. They work when they get wet too. They are strapped to ones wrist so they will not fall off. Mechanicals may even survive an EMP bast as long as it wasn't magnetized.

Short version: He is setting himself up for failure if he continues to rely on a phone for a time keeping device in the field. Just saying...
 
I never have issues with my time. I would have exchanged for a new one. My philosophy is simple. If I get a new product and I experience 1 single issue with it out of the box then it gets returned. I'm not going to waste my time trying to fix something that is brand new, nor should I have to. (btw, I didn't return my spec and still have my original one)
 
well the verizon store manager thought it was because he had not selected data roaming.... I have been gone to Haiti for 10 days and found out that he is still having problems with time... worked for 2 days and now it is 10 minutes off.... :(
 
Maybe, but if network time is selected, then the phone syncs to the time the cell network provides. Like I said, even here, vz is 15 seconds off atomic. Using apps like clocksync allow you to keep your phone synced to atomic.
 
well we cleared all time related data yesterday.... off 10 minutes this morning.... so going to do a factory reset in a bit.... I am looking at how to backup the phone now.... :)

If so, the phone is broken. With that selected, the phone will be 14 seconds faster than atomic time, because of Verizon's network time.
 
It probably won't fix anything, unless there was some corrupt data, and the phone is broken. That's weird though... I've never heard/seen a phone off by that much when connected to the NTP.
