Speed Test results

McNulty

Newbie
I grabbed the speedtest.net app that I keep hearing about. Im with Virgin Mobile in Canada. I think Im supposed to be 4G but my reception bar always has an "H" on it. So i wanted to post the results of my test and see what you guys have to say about it.

Virgin Mobile network
Samsung Galaxy Nexus
Phone is all original. Just a few apps from Play Store
Test done at 4:30am in a basement

Results:

Download - 10.56Mbps
Upload - 2.70Mbps
Ping - 78ms

Any observations, comments, advice are appreciated
Thanks

Seems pretty solid to me.

Thanks IOWA
Do you think its fast enough, if i teather to do online gaming? Like cod, swtor, wow, etc?

As a fellow gamer, and mobile device user, you're going to run into many different issues. First off all, latency. You're going to ruin the game experience for others because wireless latency is nowhere near the latency on a real connection. You know that guy that always lags the game? Well, doing this you'll be 'that guy'.

From a legal perspective, do you have the carrier's ok to tether, or is this being done under the table? I can't endorse the latter, and that sort of abuse just ruins it for everyone else.

Sorry IOWA, im still brand new to Androids coming from iPhone. I used my phone as a hotspot all the time and no issues. Raided on wow few nights a week as a healer with little issues aside from occasional disconnects.i know Android is completely different.

What do you mean when you ask if I have the carriers "okay"? Whats under the table tethering? Isnt it all part of the phones and isnt tethering just using data? Its your data, whether ur using it to watch youtube on ur phone or on your laptop, whats the difference?

That is more than enough speed for online gaming. Online gaming takes a lot less network resources than you would assume. People have (reportedly) played fine off of a 3G connection. But, of course, if you tether without a plan, that could violate your carrier's TOS and you can end up either paying for the service, anyways, or get your service cancelled if the carrier finds out.

Well, there is "official" tethering, and there is "tether anyway, even without paying the carrier tethering fee's" tethering. Whichever you choose is up to you. Some people like to have it on the up and up, some people say it's their data, why can't they use it. That's the difference between the two.

As far as gaming goes, there is a HUGE difference between latency and bandwidth, and it's often a big misconception.

This article details the difference between capacity and latency quite nicely. Gaming is far more dependent on latency, not capacity.

Ok so i guess with iPhones tethering is no problem and with Androids its a whole different animal. I'll call my carrier later today and go over everything with a rep.

Thanks guys

No, it all boils done to carrier policy. Please read the link I gave you, and going over what you want with your carrier sounds like a great idea. Not sure you how mean a different animal though. Care to explain that bit?

Good Luck! :D
