Split home screen (Xperia Z5 compact)

I passed my phone across to someone to show a photo (Sony Album app), they pressed something & managed to split my screen into two sections, one showing photos & the other showing the closed apps list. How did this happen? I'd love to recreate it but I cant.

Or to put another way.. anybody know how to display two apps on one screen?

Hi, to get a split screen on my HTC M9, I press and hold the 'recent apps' button and if the current app supports split screen the current app remains at the top half of the screen and the recent apps list appears at the bottom half of the screen. I scroll through it and select the app I want.

To close the split screen I press and hold the recent apps button.
