Spotify for US is Available

Looks like spotify is available in the US.
Spotify has landed in the U.S. Sign up to get your invite now - Spotify

But, you need an invite.

Invites get entered here

Ok, since I was the first one to post this, I think someone with an extra invite should PM me with it. Thanks in advance :)

Can't wait to try this service out.

EDIT: I got it, but wow, the totally neutered it for the US. No free streaming. With the free version, you can only play songs that are on your phone. Pretty much a total waste unless you pay.

Oh well.

There are articles over the past couple of months suggesting that they would do 6 months free mobile streaming and then 10 hours per month free mobile streaming after that.

Looks like none of that made it.

Just for clarification - the free service is nothing more than just another media player on your phone? Like PowerAmp or MixZing or whatever?

Yes, that's what it looks like to me. Not as good as those though since this is built around searching a catalog online and streaming.

By the way, since Nov, 2010, the UK version allows for 10 hours streaming per month free with a maximum of 5 plays for a single song. Before that, there were even fewer restrictions.

This is even way more restrictive.

This is going to be a big dud in the US.

Maybe some better news here. The way the app worked wasn't matching what's being written.

I emailed the author of this article.
First look: Spotify Review | Music and Audio | Playlist | Macworld

In the article he says "
"free (you can listen to a limited number of hours of music per month)"
Here's his reply.

I've heard of this glitch but it's only a glitch, not policy.

From the press release:

Spotify Free * the unsurpassed free music service. With an invite, enjoy
on-demand, buffer-free access to over 15 million songs on your computer,
great social features, manage your own music files through Spotify, and
sync with your cellphone or iPod. Features occasional advertising.

Ok. That seemed puzzling to me 'cuz my understanding was that it was a streaming service. I've heard it offers a digital locker as well. I'm not sure. I'd be happy to get an invite if someone wants to PM me one. I'll try it out. Tell everyone if it's a fail or a success.

People have been posting invites in this thread:
Spotify has landed in the US : Music

I grabbed a couple out of there.

I'm sure there must be some other ways to get them too.

I set up an account for my mom as well and she gets the same message that says to subscribe to a premium account when she tries to stream.

I don't see people, in general, complaining, so maybe it's just something I did wrong when I set up the account.

Would love to see what others are getting.

EDIT: I emailed him back. Perhaps he was thinking I was only asking about streaming to desktop.

This page sure makes it clear that there is NO free streaming to iphone or android
http://www.spotify.com/us/mobile/overview/
"For Free or Unlimited users: if you have an iPhone or an Android, you can help yourself to the Spotify Mobile app and wirelessly sync all your own music files. There’s no access to the Spotify music library or Offline mode, but you can log in to Spotify and search for tracks."

Edit: confirmed that free version does no mobile streaming, it's just a music player.

Sorry, there is nothing to see here.

I can confirm that this is 100% correct. I can stream to my computer, but not my mobile device. When you try to stream to a mobile device with a free account you get a message saying "Premium needed to stream." Also, it started a wireless sync with my Android device and started syncing everything in my library to it. I didn't want that at all. Now I've got to clean off space on my device.

As a free service, I'm personally sticking to a Amazon Cloud player. Streaming any song in the world to my computer is ok I guess, except that I don't listen to music on my computer. I listen to music on my phone.

Edit: I've found a limited use for Spotify. You can easily listen to an entire album before you buy it thus determining which songs are good and which ones are crappy which you can't always do from the 30 second preview.
