Sprint $10.00 Fee

Had a web chat today with a rep from Sprint. When I asked what the $10.00 fee for my Epic was for (because it is very vague every where I look) the rep replied with this answer:

05/02/2011 12:48:11PM Agent (Vincent P): "The $10 Premium Data Add-on is a price increase only for smartphone customers to address the increased costs associated with operating smartphones on the Sprint network."

So....... it costs Sprint to run the Epic on their network?? And here I was, thinking that I "paid" for my phone already..

Yeah theres been a bunch of threads on this...The nice thing about it, is that even with that fee Sprint is still the cheapest carrier. The bad thing about it is that sprints 3g service is 4th among carriers.

But they told me that the $10 fee was to "help the ever growing 4g network". So by that logic i've paid $120 and got to use 4g for about 20mins when I was in Kansas City.
 
4G? what 4G? I get 4G here where I live but I am not JOKING when I tell you it runs faster when I use 3G....Seroius

Yea, but when they build a 3g tower you are all over that, but of course you just seem like to complain about 4g.

The fee was never about 4g, 3g, or 2g. It was about data.

In 2005 the average cellphone data use was less then 100mb per year per consumer.

2011 the average data use is about 2 gigabytes per user per month.

But prices for 3g service has actually decreased as the cost to build out the network increased.

So you are now using about 200 times more data for about 6% increase and cost. It just amazings me about what people will complain about.

AT&T is insanely expensive if you use a lot of data AND text messages.

4gb data plan - $45
Text plan - $20 (don't remember the details, but this was the plan I would need)

So you're at $65 just for data and texting! My whole Sprint bill is $80! For comparable plan with AT&T, it will cost me $130/mo. Trust me, I already priced them out when I started roaming all the damn time. Verizon will be $110/mo. That doesn't include any kind of premium phone fees if they apply. The AT&T plans online are confusing as hell.

Does it matter?

$10 for smartphone data. That's the best explanation you are going to get.

Either you pay it, or you don't. There is always Verizon and AT&T

It's not about what every idiot you ask says. It's about what Sprint says. From the start they said it was simply a "premium data fee". Nothing more, nothing less. I could call it the "blue-monkeys-shooting-out-of-my-butt fee" and you could complain, "I don't have blue monkeys shooting out of my butt". Just because I said it doesn't mean it's relevant.

I am just glad it is only 10$ and not Blue Monkeys shooting out of my Butt.
 
Maybe they are using the money to expand WiMAX. I could use some 4g around my way. i used it in ATL and was pretty impressed by the speed. I'll give a $120 donation for that.

You're on the cheapest of the major carriers with a top of the line device, and you're complaining?
