Root [Sprint/Cricket] CM update question

This is probably a dumb question but I'm pretty new to all of this and googled the crap out of it without really finding an answer.

I rooted my phone easily and then managed to flash CM 10.0 kind of by accident (trial and error).

I've seen where you can install updates through the system settings. My question is, do you have to back everything up every time you update. I'm assuming you don't but wasn't able to find a definitive answer.

Is the process similar to OTA updates on stock phones, you download it and it installs by itself? Or do you have to boot into recovery mode and flash it like the first time? I'd like to have a stable version of 10.1 running.

Sorry if this question is stupid.

Its exactly similar to an OTA update on stock phones.

Ideally, it will install itself, but sometimes its unable to locate the file it downloaded in recovery and you have to manually flash it (itll reboot itself into recovery, you just have to help it find the file). Theres no *need* to do a nandroid, but it cant hurt ;)

Thanks so much! Figured I'd be safe and ask before I did anything.

So yeah.....that was kind of a disaster (lol). It worked fine, but I realized that my Google account was gone (contacts, gmail, etc.). SO I figured I would just re-flash (is that even a term?) gapps......and upon doing that ended up in an endless FC loop upon rebooting. Soooo I cleared the cache and just reflashed the 10.1 zip again. Everything is fine. Except I have no gapps. Can anyone help me so I don't get the FC loop again?

I sound absolutely clueless I'm so sorry :(

I did. I flashed a newer version of gapps (gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip) and that got me out of the loop, but during the Google account setup process I still got a bunch of fc's.

Everything appears to be working now except for Gmail app. I think I'll have a friend take a look at work tomorrow. Thanks for the help again.

*update*

Uninstalled and reinstalled Gmail app. Everything is working perfectly. :)
