Root [Sprint/Cricket] how to install new update on rooted s3

Samsung released an update for the s3 but everytime I try to install it fails..is there another way to get this update

If your on a custom rom, the update will fail every time.
If not, try to shut down phone, take battery out. Push (let's say) volume button for two minutes, just to drain the left over power. Put battery back in, reboot. Try and update as normal.

Well, if you are on Sprint, I would wait a few days and there will be another update available.

To sum it up though, dont take the OTA update. Its the custom recovery that prevents the OTA from installing in nearly every case. All you need to do is download the updated stock rooted ROM from a place like XDA. Then you just wipe dalvik cache and cache and flash the ROM from your custom recovery that you installed when you rooted.

Additionally, you can flash the firmware files containing the new updates radios

Assuming you have sprint... the link is below

I'm still confused, i'm not on a custom rom, but it's rooted. I have titanium backup stopping a lot of processes...that's it.

You may not be on a custom rom, but the same rules still apply.

To do an OTA update, you need the stock recovery, which means it's going to fail every time if you still have the custom recovery in place.

As already said, it's much easier and recommended to flash a stock rom, or even just the radio/modem to get the updates that update has.

Ultimately if your dead set on taking the official OTA update, it'll kill your root leaving you to root again.

Even tho you don't have a custom rom and your running stock and just rooted once you install titanium backup it will automatically install busy box which will cause your phone status to show modified instead of normal so you will not be able to get any ota updates.

To clear up some points here.

You can take an ota update on a stock rooted rom.

You just have to have the stock recoveru installed.

I did not know that. With everything I have learned that one slipped by.

Really though why would you have stock recovery if you rooted?

With the STU, if stock was modified in anyway, the update would fail. You had to flash back to stock.

Since I am now on another device, I will have to try that out on old device. That way I have no worries of bricking it.

Thank you for clearing that up.

You can flash the stock recovery from your custom recovery.

Easier than Odining back to stock like ive seen some do to take an ota.

Its how i had my father update when i was 8 hours away and he was getting an ota. I know it works, tested on my own phone before having family do it. Shouldn't matter if your modified, just need stock rom and recovery. Also, many phones verify system apps so if youve uninstalled any via titanium you probavly want to unfreeze/reinstall them

The best way to uodate is just to flash the stock rooted rom and firmware from recovery, but theres multiple ways to get it done
