sorry for all the questions, but im just trying to learn. should i keep i stock kernal or do i need to install a new one when flashing? how do i install a new one and can i keep going from kernal to kernal if need be?

You don't need to flash one but custom kernels allow over clocking, and improve battery life. To install just boot to recovery, install the kernel, wipe cache and dalvik, fix permissions, reboot and enjoy!
I personally use ktoonez kt747.

What kernel you flash is gonig to depend heavily on the base of the ROM you are running.

AOSP ROMS require AOSP kernels

It follows that...

Touchwiz ROMS require Touchwiz kernels

If you try to flash the wrong kernel type it will not boot, and you'll have to either restore a nandroid, reflash your ROM, or flash the correct kernel type.

This is the Sprint all things root forum. If you are looking for Virgin options I'd check over there and make sure thats the right kernel for your phone.

I know they're the same model but there may be functional differences.

What kernel would you recommend for a rooted stock ROM ? I am specifically interested in improved battery life. Better performance would be a bonus.

Thanks !

I believe he does both, the tw one is further down in his thread.

If I'm on touchwiz I run AnthraX, but unless you're a member on that forum you won't be able to have access to it.

I installed the KT747 kernel for TW and followed the instructions to flash, then wipe cache and dalvik, fixed permissions.

Now when I boot the phone I get the KT Kernel screen, followed by the Samsung and Sprint animations and then it gets stuck with the pulsating Samsung screen.

Pulled battery and tried again, no change.

Any idea why that would be and how to fix it ?

How long did you leave it trying to boot before pulling the battery?

Not sure, maybe a minute or so?

The first time around it went through the "upgrading Android" as it always does after wiping dalvik. Then it went to the pulsating Samsung screen where it seems to be stuck.

Also, every 15 seconds or so I get a short haptic feedback on the stuck screen

I just tried to restore from backup that I made prior to flashing this but now I get a checksum mismatch, even on older backups...oh boy...

I need some help :(

Nothing worked. Now I only get to the Samsung Galaxy SIII screen.

I need to completely start over.

Any help in this is greatly appreciated as my head is now spinning.

Where do I find the latest stock (rooted) ROM ?

Edit: I am downloading the full MD4 ROM from your earlier link.

I assume I will have to re-root.

Will I have to reflash the firmware and modem or is that included in the Full ROM ?

So I was able to restore to an older MB1 backup I found on my PC.

All was well,

Then I updated to MD4 , flashed the firmware and the ROM as explained in post #2 in this thread: Your way to update to MD4 - Android Forums at AndroidCentral.com
I have done this before successfully.
Now I am back again at the Samsung Galaxy SIII screen and nothing happens.

Did it twice and still no luck. What the heck is going on with this phone ?
