Root [Sprint/Cricket] Must I install busybox when I root?

I will be rooting my brand new S3 tonight. I am a former htc evo 4g user with full root so am not new to the concept. Why is busybox needed and can I skip installing it?

Exactly what busybox does, I am not sure but I think most custom roms come with busybox installed.
As far as rooting, I didn't have to specifically install busybox. But after root, I soon flashed a rom with busybox installed. I also had to update busybox to install the Google wallet mod for Verizon.
What carrier are you on?

Hi, I know you from the htc evo 4g forum....and were ALWAYS very helpful. I am with Sprint. I was planning, as of right now, to stay with the stock rom, but need the hotspot feature so when I travel with the kids my lifd is at peace!!!!. My need for root with my evo was battery conservation, but my need for root now is really only for wifi on my wifi tab and laptop while on the go.

Well, installing busybox won't hurt it. I saw 2 different tutorials in the Sprint root forum.
I think I may move this thread there so others with your device can chime in also.
:)
I know of 2 guys who have your device and just rooted theirs.
One of whom is DragonSlayer.
He may be able to tell ya what guide he used:)

Stand by and I will push your thread over there buddy:D

Hey everyone!

Busybox is one of those things that runs "under the hood" when you're rooted. Its required, and usually installed automatically either by flashing a custom ROM or when you flash the SU.zip on top of the stock ROM.

Not having it wont brick you, but you won't be properly rooted

Busybox is something that you install on your phone to give you some additional handy Linux commands. You need Busy Box installed because some commands are not available to you and you made need them for some root level tasks.

I'm not sure if Busybox is necessary to root, but I don't think so. But many root level apps require busybox, so if you don't install it you're losing some of the benefits of rooting.

Why don't you want to install it?

No particular reason. Just switched from a rooted HTC EVO 4G to SGS3 and am not rooted yet on my new device. I want to root it, but stay as close to stock as possible......FOR NOW. I may want to explore custom roms once I am familiar with this new device.
