Root [Sprint/Cricket] Rooting Samsung Galaxy S3--Please Help

sss7527

Newbie
So before now I rooted an HTC Evo 4G (took forever, too). I've pretty much forgotten everything I know about rooting.

Either way, I followed a guide online that had me use Odin to flash ClockworkMod Recovery. The guide said I would then be rooted. After checking Root Checker and Rom Manager, I've realized I am not rooted. Then I remembered something about only being rooted if you're flashing a custom rom. However, any time I try to install a zip in my sdcard from CWM, it says that it can't mount it. This happens with my internal and my external SD card. Help pretty please?

Hey there! :)
What guide were you following? And what carrier do you have?
Installing CWM recovery only will not root you unless there was some other files in the .zip that was installed via ODIN

I flash cwm recovery in odin and it worked or so I thought when I go into cwm recovery to flash my su zip it won't mount to sd card efs data cash or anything can someone help

Where do I find that? I don't believe it was that one.
I think this is the one you could try:

Welcome cone37!
See the link above. You can flash that in ODIN:)
It worked for another member here: (who also had problems with mounting)

Hope that works for ya:)

So how do I use adb? I run the .exe and the command prompt just disappears.

EDIT: So I got in, but now it's saying su not found when i type it in. Isn't flashing the recovery what gives me su?

Sorry, I need to be brought up to speed :0
What step are you on, or what are you trying to do? Install a new recovery via ODIN?

Oh, dear. I'm afraid I've encountered another problem. Preparing to flash another OS, I made a backup of my stock rom, and selected wipe data/factory reset in the CWM menu. Then, later just to make sure, I tried restoring my backup. . .and I'm getting an md5 mismatch error. Is it because I renamed the backup?

Did you rename it after the backup was done?
Let's say you backed it up and it was named, for example, "backup".
Then you rename it to, "mybackup".
When you try to restore "mybackup" I think the error you encounter will occur.
That's my best educated guess:)

Edit: Dais is correct below...I do recall renaming backups on my Evo :)
Thanks Dais ;)

I renamed it because it was a string of numbers (I'm pretty sure it was a date. . .but for whatever reason it thought I made the backup in 1970). I can't rename it back because I forget what it was.
