Root [Sprint/Cricket] Total Noob needs help Sprint Galaxy S3

Hi. I'm a total noob. But i need some help with my phone. I'm getting a Sprint Galaxy S3 because the HTC Evo 4G Shift that the Sprint store talked me into is a total POS.

I will try to post this in the appropriate thread if I can find it.

All I want for Christmas is to unlock the wi-fi hotspot/tether capability of the phone. I don't really care too much about fancy do it all ROM and all that stuff. I would be perfectly happy with the native Sprint apps as long as the phone works, the email works, the SMS and MMS works and I can use the phone as a hotspot for my iPad.

Questions are: do I need to root AND get a new ROM? Or can I root it and then add a 3rd party wifi app?

Thanks for any advice and help. Please respond in crayon, because I don't understand the lingo and I'm old and feeble and mostly brain dead.

Welcome to the forums :D

From what I've gathered, its very hard to get the hotspot working on the stock ROM. I'd suggest flashing a custom ROM

That's not accurate. I'm rooted with the stock ROM, stock Kernel, and successfully using WiFi tethering.

Follow these instructions to root and remain with stock ROM (you won't lose any data). Be sure to read the instructions carefully, then the entire thread, then follow the instructions very carefully, step by step.:

Then see this thread for tethering once you're rooted:

WiFi tether for JellyBean is here.... Confirmed..... - Android Forums at AndroidCentral.com

It worked for me.

The links meyerweb posted to work for getting wifi tether, the only thing I'd add is that (at least for me), after you are done tethering, you have to reboot your phone to get regular wifi back on the phone used for tethering.
