[Sprint] First time Rooting help for Galaxy Nexus

I know this probably seems stupid of me asking stupid questions, but I know I can only come to you guys to help me with my GNex problems/questions.

I am looking to root my Sprint Galaxy Nexus (4.2.1) but I have never rooted anything before since this my first smart device. I've owned this phone for about a year now, and I almost rooted my phone, but had no idea what I was doing.

This is where you guys come in. I would like if you could give me like an instructional guide to backing up and rooting my phone (i.e. sites, applications, tips, etc.) And also some good suggestions for great roms and whatever else for my phone.

Also, could you give me some like troubleshooting info like to reverse and go back to stock, undo a problem, restore content on my phone, etc.?

I greatly appreciate all your help and understanding. :D
 
Check out the how to guide under all things root. Its stickied in the thread and is the second post. Urge, one of our great guides, wrote it up flawlessly. He even included pictures. You can also reference some of the threads on XDA. Sorry for the lack of links, as I'm on my phone at work.

Be sure to read up and feel comfortable with the process before starting. As always ask questions if you have them.
 
I honestly haven't looked yet. With my busy schedule,I should I don't have the time to really spend a day on this. But I will probably start this weekend.
I also got some personalized tips from my friend on rooting my phone, but I still don't know what ROMs I should get?

Can anyone provide any good recommendations for what i should do or get? I want the best I can get, also customizable, and something that takes up little battery or increases battery life.

I have been running JBSourcery for the past like three months. I haven't really had time to play with very many other Roms, but I know I can always go to this one and it will be good.
