Sprint Premier Ends. Changes here.

im not going to miss anything. i remember when smartphones (as opposed to dumb phones at the time) used to come out once every 2 years or so on Sprint (my 13th year btw). there was usually one major smartphone.. you cats are spoiled with wanting a handset every 12 months. :p

now i get a new handset each year too mind you.. :) im jus' sayin' i am not going to miss it. ill gladly pay full price for a handset i like if its between upgrades...

I remember it all too clearly, especially my first "smart" phone that couldn't even reply or send outgoing text messages, only receive (Samsung i500 for those interested).

I don't think I'll miss it either. Before the EVO, I had my Touch Pro for 2 years (and also didn't even realize there was a 1 year upgrade available). I don't know if I'll be so quick to pay full price for a phone, but I'd consider it if it was without a doubt something that would completely blow away my MoPho. I didn't even think I'd be upgrading this year, until the MoPho was announced.

Since Sprint is making all of these changes, would this be considered a loophole if you want to get out of your contract and not pay early termination fees?

i have an upgrade available to me now if i want it. if i want an e4gt and be able to upgrade in 20 months, can i do that now? do i have to wait until oct 2nd? jan 1, 2012? so many dates being thrown around for different things, my head is spinning...

what i understand, if you have an upgrade now then its best to do it now before oct 2.

if you are a gold premier member and have an upgrade now, take it and you will have one more dec 2012. after that you go to the 20 months.

if you wait until after oct. 2 you will automatically roll over to the new to you 20 month program.

The details of the changes to Primer Benefits are posted on the Sprit website
quote:
Sprint Premier Gold customers - who aren't immediately eligible under the New For You Upgrade program - will have until the end of 2012 to take advantage of their annual upgrade. Once customers take advantage of their annual upgrade, they will seamlessly transition to the New For You Upgrade Program. If they don't take advantage of their annual upgrade by 12/31/12, they will continue to immediately qualify for an upgrade under the New For You Upgrade Program.

If you log into your Sprint Account you can check your Premier status.

when does this "new for you" officially start?? my understanding was, if you recently upgraded, you get 1 more upgrade 1 yr from now. but if you upgrade now/in the next week or so, then you get switched to the new for you and won't be eligible for the 1 yr thingy. but then if it hasn't started yet, they might only give me an upgrade in 22 months, not 20.

another twist to the story is, i've only been with sprint since the OG Evo came out. but when the premier status thingy came about, the customer service lady switched me to Gold status even though i don't deserve it. so my scare is i'd upgrade, but in a year they'd say "hey you're not a gold member" or something along those lines.

uuuuggghhhh

if you were on a qualifying plan that would automatically put you on gold. you dont have to be a decade long member.

the new for you starts oct. 2. like i said above, if you have an upgrade now, use it before oct 2. this will lock in one more 12 month upgrade by dec. 2012.

once oct.2 hits, any upgrades after that will be 20 months.

if you are still confused, i recommend e-mailing ecare and getting it in writing so then you are covered. their chat/email folks are very helpful.

Is it really true that along with the elimination of the premier status they are ending unlimited data?

I hope I'm wrong.

שלום

NO Sprint is NOT dropping unlimited data. did you hear sprint tell you this? did you call a sprint rep and ask them and they stated this?

boy i tell you the internet can spread rumors like wildfire...

i don't have money to throw around, but i do have an upgrade available now via gold premier. i was going to wait for news of the nexus prime on sprint.

argh, what do i do? i hate to waste it on the SGSIIE4GT, which isn't a waste if the Prime doesn't come, but if it comes in spring 2012, then i would hate it. argh, what to do?

by the way, i do hope if/when there's a flood of fruit users on sprint network, it's not going to drag my data down, especially when it's not so great now.

I've been a Premier Silver member since February when I got my Evo Shift, and haven't used the benefits, so it doesn't matter too much to me, but dang... if the iPhone's putting Sprint in such a deep hole that they have to gut the Premier program to dig their way out, is the iPhone really worth it? We were just fine without the damn thing...
Still, I'd rather keep unlimited data (seeing as I just signed up for Netflix last week) than my Premier Silver status.

show me where Sprint has stated they are receiving the iphone.

show me where Sprint (not the rumor mill known as the internets) has also stated the iphone is forcing them to cost cut...

no way am i trying to be rude or disrespectful, but it amazes me how a couple of articles form unsubstantiated sources can get way out of proportion.

and if someone shows a link to a computer screen with words on it that was alleged to be internal to sprint, that ain't proof. :D

i know its hard for some, but wait until october when sprint announces whatever they are going to announce. THEN let the speculation start...

the way i see it Sprint are a corporation that is in business to make money for its shareholders. cutting costs in this economic downturn many are experiencing is affecting Sprints bottom line... things have to be cut...

Great post, marctronixx! Bloomberg's website doesn't even have "solid" proof that Sprint is getting the iPhone, from what I read in the article:
Sprint Said to Plan Unlimited Data Offer With Apple?s IPhone - Bloomberg

And like you said, even "internal memos" leaked that are supposedly from Sprint's end are not necessarily "substantiated," just because they're posted on the internet. Like this:
Internal Memo Suggests Sprint iPhone by October 15th Sprintfeed

It's all fun to speculate and anticipate, but until Sprint makes any sort of "formal" announcement or press release, everything is still rumor. Some sources might have credibility, but that can't and won't be substantiated until there's a formal announcement from Sprint.

What can i say? this is the post of the week right here!

its just amusing to me how a few posts of "sprint may get the iphone i heard" then you hear in the same breath "well that means unlimited data will go away..."

HUH? who? what? I mean Sprint may get it.. we will find out soon.

i know.. gossip is so juicy! ooh how we love to taste it... :D

Hahaha...so funny. You know what the best part is, I'll never turn my back on Android in order to move over to Apple! I'm a leader, not a follower...:D

Added a link to the CNET article about Stephen Bye's discussion of Sprint's plan to keep unlimited data. I would have linked Phandroid's article, but it seemed more opinion piece/commentary than news.

If you have a Gold Premier upgrade in your pocket and want to be able to upgrade again next year with premier option, do it now before October 2nd.

would this be signing a new 2 yr contract, and them letting you sign another 2 yr contract in 1 yr? or would it be signing a 1 yr contract, and then signing a 2 yr contract this time next year?? i have an EVO4G which has been great to me, am a gold member, and the E4GT looks very tempting. but i'm not sure i wanna be locked into sprint for the next 3 yrs with all these network changes. who knows how it'll end up. 4g sucks in chicago (won't penetrate buildings anywhere i'm at) while all my friends on VZW have great LTE speeds. its making me contemplate just paying an ETF and going to VZW for the Vigor or the Nexus Prime...

If you upgrade your Evo now to the ET, you will be signing a new two-year contract and you should be eligible for one more upgrade next year. Just be sure to upgrade before the end of this year in order to qualify for your last Gold upgrade next year as well. Note that signing a new two-year contract replaces your existing contract; they don't get added together.

Sprint IS getting the iPhone. But I'm sure you knew that already by now.

But his post was prior to anything official was announced. Now that it's announced, I don't think the feeling behind it will change. My feeling is, those that jump to the iPhone coming from Android just never really took full advantage of all that Android OS has to offer and never really bothered to want to learn.

The iPhone is still great technology and a very good phone. I just don't believe it warrants the hype that it got when it was first released.

Apple demanded and got numerous major changes from Sprint in order for the latter to sell the iPhone4S. These changes to the premier program, the upgrade schedule? All these and more are a direct result of Apple's demands.

How sad. Apple tells companies to bend over and take it, and these companies willingly comply.

Got a link to back that up?

It's entirely possible that Sprint made these changes in an effort to keep unlimited data for as long as possible.

Yeah. It was just an amazing coincidence that all these changes occurred just weeks before the iPhone was announced on Sprint.

Who would think to blame a phone that Sprint MUST sell 30.5 million of? Yeah, 30.5 million iPhones over four years on a network of only 30 million postpaid customers. That is Sprint's commitment to Apple. How The iPhone May Be Bad For Sprint (S, AAPL, T, VZ, VOD) - MarketWatch

You would have to very naive to think that Sprint won't do everything it can to make a profit in order to support these 30 million sales to 30 million subscribers.

Sure, Sprint bent over for Apple. But what choice did Sprint have? There was no doubt that churn to other carriers was primarily caused by customers buying the iPhone. This is a bet-the-company gamble based on the hope that subscribers will be drawn to Sprint because of unlimited data. If Sprint has to drop everything else in order to keep unlimited data to grab iPhone sales, Sprint will do it.
