Root [Sprint] Stuck on ADB sideload..

Newbie
Hi -- I'm pulling my hair out at this point, so I figured I'd give this a shot. I'm completely new to rooting and I'm sure I have no idea what I'm talking about, so please bear with me.

I'm trying to root my Sprint M7. I don't really want to deviate from stock so I'm not trying to load some complex rom. I just want to be able to use the phone as a hotspot.

Anyway, I can get the phone unlocked, and when I sideload SuperSU through Recovery, the phone gets stuck on "Unmounting /system and /data". If I restart the phone, I don't have the SuperSU app, and when I try to use Root Checker, it says root access is not installed.

I realize this is probably not enough info to completely understand what I'm doing wrong, but I'd really appreciate any help possible. Thanks!

Which custom recovery? Which version?

Have you tried just placing the SuperSU zip on your internal storage, and installing via the custom recovery?

TWRP, Advanced, adb sideload isn't working reliably for everyone on Windows with the latest TWRP - we've been trying to track down the issue since Friday.

Are you using some toolkit to do this or a proper Mini-SDK?

Moving this to the root forum btw.

And if you're just trying an adb sideload while the phone is up and running, or just idling in recovery, that's never going to work anyway.

Thanks for the quick response! I'm using ClockwordMod Touch v6.0.4.6. for no reason other than it was the first suggested recovery I came across. I'm trying putting the zip on the internal storage now. I am not using a toolkit.

I did that before I started any of this, thankfully. When I place the zip file on the phone's SD card, I can't find the file in Recovery... I can't believe I'm having such a difficult time with this.

No, you're doing fine and it takes a while to get used to new interfaces.

Look also in /storage/emulated/0 or any path like that.

It's in there somewhere. :)

Well, I've put the zip in multiple folders from my PC, but I can't access any of these folders from Recovery.. likewise, I can't access any of the files I can see in Recovery when I'm connected to my PC.

It sounds like you're down somewhere in a system folder while in recovery.

In the recovery, install, file list - does it show a folder named ".." if so, choose that, you'll go up one.

Repeat until you're at the top and can see either /sdcard or /storage.

I use TWRP, haven't used CWM for some time, apologies if I'm vague, I'm going by memory here.

No.. oddly that isn't an option. The only folders I can access are 0, GPU, audio, mms, musicchannel, and zchgd, which I cannot access through the pc.

Should I just switch to TWRP? Is that difficult?

No. No it was not. It also easily found the zip file. AND WORKED!

Edit: I spoke too soon I think.. When I run SuperSU, it says there is no binary.

It's really easy.

Download

http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/m7wls/openrecovery-twrp-2.8.5.0-m7wls.img

Place in same folder as fastboot.

Put phone into FASTBOOT USB mode. Volume down + power while turning on the phone.

Open command window to where fastboot and TWRP are on your pc.

Say -

fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.8.5.0-m7wls.img

It will say it transferred some bytes followed by OKAY.

Make sure we're on about the original One, not the One M8 from 2014, and Sprint or don't use the download I gave you.

Make a new nandroid backup to start, TWRP and CWM backups are not compatible.

If TWRP offers to auto-install SuperSU, let it.

Sorry, looks like I jumped the gun. I did do all of that, and I am running a Sprint M7. As I mentioned above, SuperSU says I have no binary installed.

Well, that seemed to have worked! Thanks for the help, Spike. I can't seem to get the actual app running, but I have successful rooted my phone. Thank you!

And btw - visit the Play Store, see if it has an update for SuperSU.

That ought to open without force closing.

If it still closes, go to recovery, Wipe, Advanced, choose cache and Dalvik *only* - see if that fixes it.

I'm actually not having any issue with SuperSU, it's that I can't get tethering to work no matter what method I use. I've seen some mention that it's a block Sprint uses since they charge for tethering, but I'm a little bummed as it was really my whole impetus in rooting to begin with. Long story short, I'm trying to set up Homepass for the 3DS on my phone since I now live in the middle of nowhere and don't know any local people. Regardless, I appreciate all your help.
