when i get to the point that you have to hold vUp+Center+Power it takes me to recovery mode instead of to the twrp screen. i'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here, any help?

Recovery Mode is where TWRP would be. Sounds like you're going into stock recovery. You need to install TWRP. IMO, the easiest way to install TWRP:
Download Goo Manager from play store. Open Goo>menu>InstallOpenRecoveryScript. Let it work it's magic. Once installed, you can boot into recovery via Goo Manager>Reboot Recovery.
