[Sprint] Unlimited Data Plan doesn't activate Sprint Hotspot?

Hello, first time poster.

I bought the Evo 3D on the 1st of March and had it rooted within the first week I had it. (huzzah)

My question or discussion at hand is:

Why is it that I grandfathered an Unlimited Data plan and on my phone it says I need to pay for one?

It says on the Sprint Mobile Broadband Plan and Hotspot Addon Changes 2011 page:
There will be no change to your Mobile Hotspot add-on monthly recurring charge. Additionally, if your phone plan contains unlimited data, you will continue to enjoy unlimited data usage on your phone while on the Sprint network.

So why can't I use this feature?

Right now, I have no internet access at our new house, so tethering was my only option. I've been using EasyTether, but it doesn't work on Linux and it cuts out every once in a while for no reason (notifications are turned off). So I'm at a loss here.

I created a thread on Ubuntu Forums asking how I could get EasyTether installed on Ubuntu and make it work, but in all honesty, I shouldn't have to do THAT MUCH to get tethering to work, a feature that is built into the phone (and apparently have to pay for).

The TL;DR version of this post:
What is a decent tethering application for the HTC Evo 3D that is also compatible with Linux? I don't mind if it's USB either, but wifi would be nice (and one that doesn't block HTTPS).
 
Tethering with a cell phone isn't a replacement for having an ISP at your house. It's a great temporary solution when you are in the car or someplace without Internet. Don't try to feed a computer full time via your phone. Sprint will drop your contract if you are consistently beyond what a phone can consume.
 
Unlimited Data plan does not activate the Hotspot. That is an additional 29.99 per month. You should probably ask around in the Rooted section for workarounds.
 
You have to pay about $30 a month for the hotspot in addition to your $80 unlimited contract. Not a bad deal if you compare it to Verizon except Verizon has much better coverage. It just depends on where you are and whether the extra $$ is worth going with Verizon. I opted to go with Sprint because I think they are on a roll and will eventually catch up with Verizon in the future if they keep up with the add campaign they have going now. Not sure if this helped but it's my 2 cents.
