Root StarburstROM & Bootanimation problems..

Can somebody tell me what im doing wrong..

I am running Starburst ROM 1.3.2 on my Desire. (Rooted using unrevoked 1 click method)

But i cannot copy the new bootanimation.zip file across no matter what i do, the options to paste into the directory (system/customize/resource) are greyed out in ASTRO and if i try using adb it wont let me either:

C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>adb push bootanimation.zip /
system/customize/resource/bootanimation.zip
failed to copy 'bootanimation.zip' to '/system/customize/resource/bootanimation.
zip': Directory not empty

Tried to remove the old file..

C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>adb shell rm /system/customi
ze/resource/bootanimation.zip
rm failed for /system/customize/resource/bootanimation.zip, Directory not empty

I have even tried rerooting the phone and installing the ROM & Data2SD again but no luck (Also tried before installing Data2SD in case it was that - same thing)

Anyone have any ideas what im actually doing wrong? I have even tried with the phone mounted while in recovery mode and its the same as when the phone is on and mounted in disk mode..

(I'm trying to use the Red WVGA file by the way and am renaming it once download to bootanimation.zip)

Any help appreciated!

Astro cant do it. If you are S-off, you could try root explorer or android mate.

However if you are s-on, you cant do it whilst android is running at all. When you tried ADB you say you were in recovery mode? This is the onyl way you can do it S-on. What exactly happens with ADB in recovery? Have you tried running it from /data/local?

Is there any easy way of telling if the phone is in S-OFF? I thought the unrevoked thing did it but dont know how to check..

Im just trying again now in recovery mode and will update in a bit!

If you have a cdma desire (no sim card) unrevoked should have done it if your radio is supported.

It doesn't s-off gsm (sim card) desires.

Boot to the hboot screen. From off, hold vol down and press powered. Should say s-on or s-off there

Don't think starburst supports cdma, so you're probably s-on

I have just checked and its S-ON (i do have a sim card)

Do you know the best way to get S-OFF with the ROM im using?

Also if it try while in recovery it says its copied but the bootanimation does not change..

C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>adb push bootanimation
.zip /system/customize/resource
1996 KB/s (10078043 bytes in 4.929s)

If i enter shell mode list the directory contents of /system/customize/resource i cannot see it in there..

But if i look using Andoid mate its only showing the filesize as 827k (the one i copied is over 9MB!)

AAAAAAARGH!!!!

Did you not test pushing to /data/local as suggested?

Theres only one way to s-off but do you really need it? If you can't do it with adb, you won't do it using any method

Yeh sorry i forgot to metion that, it works in recovery mode and i can push the file but no difference on the boot screen:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>
C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>adb push bootanimation
.zip /data/local
1984 KB/s (10078043 bytes in 4.960s)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>

I checked on the starburst site and it said that it was in system/customize/resource..

I cant understand why even though the file is being pushed its not actually being updated on the device!?

That would mean that the Dev hasn't enabled the use of /data/local for boot animations. Only way of doing it is through a ZIP or going S-OFF and doing it through ADB

Thanks for the replys guys, i fixed this but in the end i had to use ROM Kitchen and update the zip file then recreate the rom!

Thanks
Dan

to my knowledge you cant s-off with starburst rom, if you want to add a boot animation. make a backup of your apps etc, open the starburst zip and swap the bootanimation in there.
