Start a car?

Can Android (Gingerbread 4.5.596MB810) be programmed to remotely start a car? Android can do nearly everything & this would be nice to have the A/C (left set on a low speed) cool the car in the dead of summer. Of course, this would also be nice for the winter...:p

This IS possible depending on the make and model of your car. There are many new cars that have the ability through various services (onStar, etc.) to be remotely started as well as perform a variety of other functions (unlocking, locking, etc.) from anywhere. If you have an older car that is not capable of such, you may still start your car remotely. I have a remote starter installed on my '96 GMC Suburban, however mine has a remote. I have not heard of it, but it is entirely possible that a similar remote starter kit for any vehicle could be paired with an android app, although at this time I am almost certain that it hasn't been done.

Short Answer: Although it's technically possible, you probably can't unless you have a newfangled car. Hope I helped. :)

The car has to be properly equipped for remote start (to be started with a compatible software interface on Android). No software will magically turn an old car without remote start into one that can be remote started.

This is on a 1996 Lexus ES300 that used to be my Mom's. I put a remote start on it for her 6 or 7 or even 8 years ago (Rattler, don't know model) and Circuit City has long since closed. IDK if something can be added to this dinosaur remote start to make it work on Android, but I certainly doubt so.

I've done some research online and Clifford, Viper & Python make remote starts capable of operating up to 2,500' away from the vehicle. They range (Danbury, CT) from $199 - $549 & would eliminate the need for my Droid X to have this function. A "Smart Start" can be added to the installed Remote Start for $299 - $349. Now we're talking $500-$800 to make it work through a Droid. Not necessary and a Remote Start can work on its own.

Something I'll research further on my own, I was just looking into what other features can be used on my new DroidX. Thanks for the feedback :)
