startup manager?

My phone has got awfly slow and buggy after installing a few apps and such. Open home lock 2.0 things like that. Using the application manager (task manager) I see that 2 maps. 2 alarm clocks, and other random unnecessary things seem to start up.

Yes ... it is in the Systems settings .. call Applications | Manage Applications

Select the app that you believe is running at startup and clear the default.

Sadly it works only for few Google applications on my EU Hero. for every other 3rd party software and most of the HTC ones the button inactive.
I'd need a startup manager too, I don't want Astrid or Cardio trainer to start with the OS.

EDIT:
Just found this:
http://www.cyrket.com/package/com.vesperaNovus.app.StartupAuditor
But reviews tell us it acts kind of weird..

I am hoping that a real startup manager will be provided by htc or android in eclair. I have a lot of things that are running at startup and the clear default is greyed out. Things like gmail, footprints, browser, mail etc..

Apologies for bringing this one back from the dead - has anyone spotted any good Android 'startup manager' programs?

It is absurd and offensive that we even have to ASK for such a basic feature to be included?!?

If I don't want an application to run at startup it should be a no-brainer for me to prevent it from doing so. I should not need to be a "power user", much less have to hack my own phone to do something like this.
