Help Static/crackling/speaker distortion

Guess everyone is affected by this and that it is a software bug. I have the problem with the sound the Hangouts App makes when sending a text. Sounds distorted most of the times. Downloaded Zedge which has all Hangouts sounds so you can play them from the app. From Zedge I can play the exact same sound over and over again without any issues. So it has nothing to do with the sound itself.

How do we get Google and Motorola to acknowledge this problem and fix it? I hope all report this or this will never be fixed. Pretty sure that it is software related.

Im from Sweden btw so it is the same for the european model.

Glad someone else is noticing this, if you want to help please call google directly and tell them you want to complain about this problem and that you also have a link in the android forums discussing this issue, if you don't do this, its not going to get looked at. Also I would tell them to escalate it to a higher level of tech support, and that you have done everything possible to fix it with no luck. I would also call motorola and report this and tell them the same thing, because both places just try to do your standard troubleshooting which does not work. 4 nexus 6 later and all have the same problem, it does no good to reset the phone, and getting a new one sent to you will not work either, its a problem with the software, possibly even in lollipop. I think google is so stock that they don't realize they need to put more detail into bugs like this, they probably don't even notice it or don't have enough people complaining about it yet. Like I was saying before, I used to have the HTC M8 and the boomsound speakers did this same exact thing, I was bummed out bad for months because that pop sound was getting on my last nerves, the issue was fixed months later by an ota update that was from HTC and was not an android update, it was a small software update that fixed it completely with all sounds. But this is googles issue and they need to fix it. I can tell they are not putting enough in, just like when you try to reset the phone and you can only shut it down, stock android is great but its so simplified that I don't think they worked out the kinks such as the management of the power going to the speakers with quick sound files, like in google voice or messenger. Who knows what is causing it but people needs to call and complain on phone or through email in the support section.

We all should submit feedback via the About Phone section on your Nexus detailing the issues we are all having.

At least this sort of feedback goes direct to google.

Hi!
Seen many others facing the issue with speakers crackling/get distorted att hight volumes on notifications/ringtones. For example alarm sound named Oxygen sounds distorted on higher volume and also the ringtone Ganymede. But youtube and such sounds like they should even att highest volume. Is this on all phones? Is it software or hardware related? Absolutley loving the phone but if my speakers are broke I need to try and get a replacement.
Can anyone confirm that they have no distortion/crackle at all?

i have a goog launch day nex 6 (so early build) and have ZERO issues with speaker distortion/crackling or any of that.

keep in mind people only post up on forums to FIND solutions, not generally to praise a piece of equipment/product, etc. also any mass assembly line produced product will no doubt have manufacturing issues, so its possible some people are experiencing this.

if you feel your model is not kosher, head to a local shop that carries these units and test theories out on one of those models.

exercise your insurance. call up the manufacturer of this device (you are still under a manufacturer warranty) and have the model tested with them.

simply asking people online will not prove or disprove your theory that your device is defective. you already posted yourself that you have read/heard, etc that "many others" have this issue, so perhaps yours does.

I can assure you my launch day goog early build nex6 does not.. ;)

Another update regarding this which makes me sure that it is software related. When I hold the one normally the crackle/distortion comes from the top speaker but when I turn it to landscape mode the crackle jumps down to the bottom speaker. This means that the speakers are ok and that it is something else that is wrong.

My Nexus 6 suffers from the same glitch. I've sent a lengthy email to Motorola and plan send the same one to Google in the nexy day or so. I'll post again when I get a response.

Dont expect to much from Motorola. I have asked 3 different Motorola Co-workers on chat if it is software related and they have just replied that I should send my phone back for a replacement. But it is rumoured that this will be solved by google in 5.1. But thats just rumours.

Thanks Jaxione. I did get a response from Motorola advising me to reset app preferences, add a personalised notification to the folder which I have done for tones/messages etc (can't find a folder for the lock sound though, earlier post suggests I will need to root the phone to get access to this), clear the cache and finally do a factory reset. I'm new to Android but from what I've read I don't think any of these will work. I've also emailed Google but haven't had a response as yet. I'm going to go down the rooting avenue I think as soon as I've read enough to be confident in what I'm doing (may take a while!).

Thanks everyone for the advices, this a great little forum full of very helpful people. If anyone wants to give me some steer on rooting I'll be very happy to listen!!

Others have reported speaker problems like this. You might want to look into getting a warranty replacement.

Anyone know if the 5.1 update fixed the issue with the sound popping on the nexus 6, for the people having this problem. I wish I could test it on my N6 but think im going to wait on the OTA its not out yet on tmobile.

I'm very late to the party, but,I just got the T-Mo64 Shamu on 4/14/15.
Immediately after initial boot/sign-in,an update prompt for Android 5.1.
Noticed the crackling right out of the gate, not sure if present pre-update.
It was pretty bad, even sound effects from navigating caused cracking/popping,still bled through after turning that off.
I'm not averse to factory resets, especially after such an update.
Sounds great now,clear as a bell,no distortion/popping/cracking anywhere. :thumbsupdroid:

I think you omitted a sentence :oops:Did you mean you did a factory reset and it cured the problem?

OK,I figured that was a given, considering the context of the post, but, for all of the editors out there:
I performed a factory reset, due to the audio issues. :p

ALL IS WELL NOW! :D

I have a few audio issues with my Motorola Nexus 6.
1. a very audible hiss when I listen through headphones: very annoying, and
2. when I am called, the ringtone sounds very soft at first and then comes up to the level I set it to.

Do you think a factory reset would help here too?

I don't use headphones, but my fist question would be is it ALL headphones or just a specific set? The increasing ringtone volume is a feature. I'm not sure if that can be disabled on Motorola phones.

It's very audible on all in-ears I use: Shure, BeyerDynamic, Klipsch. Also: when sound volume gets very low, it's like the phone tries to clip the sound volume to zero, resulting in a crackle. As for the increasing ringtone volume: I thought it was a feature too, but I can't seem to switch it off... :-(

O, and I'm doing a factory reset now. Won't harm anyway, I'll let you know if it fixed the issue.

It is in fact a feature you can't turn off. I don't mind it, but I know others find it idiotic. There are a few apps that purport to disable it, but from what I've read, they don't work well on Motorola phones.

Have you tried a Bluetooth headset?

No, I did not try a bluetooth headset... That might just work to get rid of the hiss from the phone's wiring - if that is the issue. Worth a try - I'll see if I can borrow one. Good tip!

Bas, is the problem on all wired headphones? Try to blow some compressed air in the 1/8" jack with the phone pointed downwards so any crud would fall out of the hole. The clipping you're describing sounds like a bad connection.

Goodmorning Outatime! Thanks for your reply: unfortunately, that's not it. The connector is clean... I'm afraid it's a defect in the phone. I bought it April this year, so I can still have it repaired under warranty. I think I'll do that.

Static on Calls Issue solved?
For the longest I was having bad static on all calls on my Nexus 6. Start suddenly. Made calls to Moto and tried to get the problem solved to no avail. Was about to send my nexus back for a new one and decided to mess around with call settings. I found something called ENHANCED 4G LTE MODE. It was checked [ON]. I switched it to off and Walaaaa static is gone.

Dont know what ENHANCED 4G LTE MODE does but to access it go to SETTINGS, Under Wireless & Networks click the "...More" option. While in "More" section go down to and click "Cellular Networks". In Cellular Networks you will find the "ENHANCED 4G LTE MODE". If ON switch OFF. Hope that helps.

From what I understand ENHANCED 4G LTE MODE is Voice over LTE (VoLTE). My wife and I have Verizon. You have to enable it on the Verizon end. It only works if the phone you are calling also has it enabled. It also does not work across carriers right now but from what I read that is being worked on and soon(?) it will work across carriers.

My wife just got a new iPhone 6s to replace her old 4. I had it enabled on my N6 and I made sure it was turned on and enabled for her new phone. What a difference! Crystal clear voice. And it does not count against your data. It only counts against voice minutes.

Static on Calls Issue solved?
...I found something called ENHANCED 4G LTE MODE. It was checked [ON]. I switched it to off...

YES, that WORKED. Thank you!

I started to have this problem with my previous Nexus 6 (during calls, half the time the other person sounded garbled, but I could still understand them). I put up with it figuring my phone was getting old and maybe I banged it once too much. But then I accidentally dropped it and broke the glass... I replaced it with a NEW Nexus 6 but it had the same audio problem (called T-Mobile tech support, but they had no idea). Turning off ENHANCED 4G LTE MODE solved this problem (although the data looks like it switches to 3G during calls. But I can live with that.).
