Still holding off on rooting? You might want to now, before your Gnex gets nerfed.

Google, is going to release an OTA to disable local searches from the search functions on the Galaxy Nexus.

It's in an effort to avoid the ban that would result from the injunction granted in favor of Apple against Samsung and Google regarding certain (questionable) patent claims.

Basically it means that: "No local searches on the device will be performed at all, taking on-device apps, integrated Gmail, and other search results out of play."

If you don't want to get this band-aid patch pushed to your device, rooting now would be a good move.

Damnit, I meant to post to the non-root section.

what does that mean, i won't be able to search for a Domino's Pizza in my area?
No, it means it won't be conducting searches of data stored locally on the device. It will only search the internet. You'll still be able to search for pizza, but if you do a search and want it to give results from your gmail contacts, phone contacts, music, and apps in addition to the internet results... you'll be shit outta luck.

Well, i'm on VZW, so i probably have a few months before the patch gets pushed out.

I'm not so sure. According to the article the patch is being pushed out to all devices regardless of carrier. Carriers may not have a say in the matter as to when the OTA patch gets pushed through.

Then again, you can just not install it, yes? Not sure how it will be, but with one of my previous phones you had to actually agree to the update before it was installed.

Could they push this update without our consent (without hitting a button that says "yes, i want to install this patch")?

Rooting it isn't going to keep you from getting the ota.

lol Nope. Supposedly it will be pushed out to everyone irregardless of carrier.I posted a link in a thread I started if you want more info.

From what I understand IF they make it mandatory then yes.

My VZW Nexus is going to be delivered today (should have gotten it yesterday but I guess FedEx didn't feel like actually knocking on my door). Do you all think that this OTA is going to be one of the first things I see when I start it up? Also, when (not if) I flash AOKP, would search be the same as prior to this patch? I don't really see why it wouldn't but I wouldn't mind some input.

The OP makes it sound worse than it is.

This ONLY affects the universal quick search bar. It does not affect in-app searching. And it's probably just temporary in any event.

i like the joke :)

but yeah seems the OP may be taking this a little to heart, i for one would not care even if i was rooted, the first thing i do when i get the phone is utilize the home replacement apps that i paid for ie: adw ex, or nova launcher. so that search bar never goes back, and i rarely use it.

Tried a few home apps...liked nova the best so installed the paid version, like everyone else changed my phone to my liking. I found the search for stuff on my phone was slower than me looking for it...but I have 20Gb free space still, so I set my search bar settings for internet only. If what I have read it will not affect me or will in only a small way.
Either way, be nice if apple would pour the money and brain cells into making a better iphone instead of suing those who make a superior smartphone.

hmmmmmmmmmm........... sounds like another patent given to Apple by our beloved Patent Office for something they NEVER invented in the first place.

Can you tell that i really LOVE Apple.......... LOL

According to Wikipedia:

One of the main requirements of patentability is that the invention being patented is not obvious, meaning that a "person having ordinary skill in the art" would not know how to solve the problem at which the invention is directed by using exactly the same mechanism.

Clearly, "ordinary skill" means something very different to the people in the patent office than is does to most of us, since, in their view, no one of oridnary skill would conceive of searching content on the same device on which the search is being initiated.

I think you fail to realize how long it takes for ota updates to come to the vzw nexus. ;) The vzw nexus is going to be infringing apples patent for quite some time.

It's a federal holiday. I think FedX home delivery is closed. My Gnex is sitting 18 miles from my front door, and I have to wait till tomorrow to get it.

/hissy fit ensues....

This is different than a regular OTA update. Since this is a legal case, mobile carriers might not have a choice in the matter as to when it gets pushed.

Update 3: We just spoke to Google, which confirmed that the Galaxy Nexus is no longer on sale right now, but Google says the device will begin shipping again next week.

Galaxy Nexus no longer available to purchase from Google Play website, will return next week | The Verge

now since apple already posted the 96million........the nexus will be not for sale for 1 week, AND if apple loses the case, they lose 96million..........96million vs 1 week of sales for 1 phone......fair trade i'd say :P

assuming they lose ofcourse, which i'm sure they will

Well, one week assuming the patch will get them around the injunction without further action. The injunction was to stop import of devices to the US (Samsung's in South Korea), and had Google and Samsung been unable to find a way around it would have kept them unavailable for sale until after the trial.. which is currently scheduled for March 31, 2014.

Very glad they found a workaround. But if you want to keep your search functionality, loading up a custom ROM might be a good idea.

The 96 million isn't a penalty, it's a bond that will be used to compensate Samsung for losses resulting from the injunction if Samsung is later found to not be infringing on the patent on which the injunction is based. If Samsung is found to be infringing, Apple gets all of this money back. If Samsung is found to be infringing, they will only be compensated for their losses, which may be much less than 96 million, and the remainder will be returned to Apple.

You have a lot of confidence that VZW can actually put out an OTA in a timely manner.

Doesn't matter to me anyway. I get to keep my patent infringing roms regardless.
