Help Stock - Can I manually install the update?

Hi all,

I unrooted and ran the RUU to go back to stock. The purpose was to apply the update directly from VM. However, Im still waiting for the update and it could be awhile appearing from other posts. So I was wondering why I could not manually apply the update? If somebody had the update as a zip file, why not? Would it not be the same as just downloading the update to a stock phone?

Thanks all.

If you go to the "Update" thread I started in the ATR section, there are links provided by Krowley that will give you the update. One of them is a firmware update, the other is another zip with other files. The firmware/Radio thing SHOULD be able tobe done as stock. The other is a flashable zip for you to do in recovery.

I'm in the same boat, waiting for the update after using RUU. I've got the update file itself(OTA_Shooter_ICS_35_S_....zip), but I can't flash it using fastboot or TWRP. If I need to use the stock recovery, I don't know how.

I know the PG86IMG.zip file contains the functional part of the update, but I want the whole thing.

You can't take the ota unless you have the stock recovery and you can't manually flash the update unless you have a 3rd party recovery.

+1 - I usually use 4ext for flashing but I cant because Im now stock and unrooted.

I'm sure the OTA will download and install if I wait around while stock, but I wanted to expedite the process so I could re-root and restore my apps. The problem is I can't flash the full, original OTA update manually. It's either impossible, or I don't know how. I've tried everything I can think of.

There's really no need for the "full" update, the only functional part is the radio update, the rest is just minor framework updates that you'll lose anyway by flashing a custom rom unless the rom incorporates them within itself.

I run the stock ROM, rooted, and the System Update notification said I still need the update when I only installed the radio stuff(I'm S-Off).

I could turn off the notification, but that's how I found out about this update, and I don't want to miss the next one.

Unless you plan on keeping your phone stock or re flashing the RUU when another update becomes available you couldn't take it anyway, ota's will only work with the stock recovery. Whenever there's a future update the dev's will usually have it released as a flashable zip within 24 hours. Also Virgin isn't exactly known for pushing updates, look how long it took to receive this one. Once you're off the stock rom the update notification will go away.

So I guess the issue is that eventhough Im now unrooted and back to the stock ROM, I have no way of running the update.zip even if I could get hold of it?

I guess I will have to sit and wait. Not sure why I havent got the update yet. I wonder if its a 'wait your turn' scenario. I was hoping to be back to a custom ROM for the work week. Oh well.

To update immediately after running the RUU, all you have to do is make sure you have the OTA update on your SD card, (use the one Prinny uploaded in ATR) reboot into bootloader and choose recovery, once you get the phone and the red triangle on the screen, hold VOL + and hit the power button.

Now you are in the stock recovery and simply choose zip from external...

Find the OTA and flash. It'll take about 3-5 minutes and the phone will reboot a couple of times. Once you are back in the system, verify the baseband version(1.09...) and build number 1.14....) then proceed to reroot as desired.

It wont let me choose any file in the stock recovery. It gives me a success rebooting; oem-00 and just reboots the phone

Mis-read this as I was just waking up when I replied earlier. You could try reflashing the stock recovery. You'd have to unlock your bootloader again, fastboot flash, relock then try the OTA again.
