Help stock email "smart sync" option?

Can someone please tell me what "smart sync" option does in the stock email app? Other choices are sync every 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, etc.

Please explain what "smart sync" does. Thanks.
 
Smart sync is supposed to sync your email based on what you do with the phone. The tag line behind it is that it will monitor how you use the email client and use this to sync your email as often as you check it, basically. I've never tried using it though, so I dont know how well it actually works.
