Stock Gingerbread Texting App

In my contact list, I may have 4 numbers under one person's name, i.e. A phone number for mobile, home, car phone, work. If I create a custom label and use it in my contact list, the label name does not show in the stock texting app. The names would show as mobile, home, custom, custom. Is there a way to have the stock texting app recognize my custom phone number labels from my contact list?

I don't think so. You may want to try a third party texting app, like Handcent or Go SMS. Both are pretty good and have a lot of features that are missing in the stock app.
