I went looking for an answer to this and found a few threads but no final answer.
Does the stock Gmail app not allow a notification icon to say you have "x" amount of unread emails? I've cleared the cache and data, deleted and reinstalled the app reloaded accts etc.
The only way I know there is email is by opening.
