Help Stock messaging app shows 1 unread text message

Just today all of a sudden my messaging app is showing 1 unread text message when I do not have any.

There is a red "1" above the icon and nothing I do clears it.

I am not rooted and I have Hangouts disabled.

I searched and did everything suggested as in make Hangouts your default app and then try clearing messages, clear all the data from your Messaging app and nothing works.

I searched other forums here and they say to find BadgeProvider and clear that, but I don't think 4.4.2 has this anymore.

Any suggestions?

Maybe try clearing the data for your launcher?

I got a sharp aquos crystal and it's happening too. Any recommendations? Others had suggested editing the badge app and turning off the notification, but I don't have a badge app.

clear app data,reboot to recovery if rooted and clear cache,dalvik-cache and reboot. for non rooted if clearing app data does not help you may consider factory reset of device. not being rooted leaves you with little options.

cleared app data and rebooted, no dice.
unsure of dalvick cache but have researched and certainly cleared the cache of the application, and quickly rebooted. The factory reset was a series of ##somenumbers# as I recall. I'll look that up and try it. So far, nada.
