Root "Stock" rooting

Zumaki

Android Enthusiast
I apologize in advance for my laziness and ignorance.

With the latest update throwing up even more bloatware, I am now definitely ready to root. However, unlike with my Moment, I pretty much have no qualms with the stock setup on the EVO, aside from a few apps I have like Beautiful Widgets and Handcent.

My plea for help has two parts:

1) Which ROM, etc do I go with to get it so my phone is pretty much exactly the way it is now, but rooted? I'd use that one app (Titanium?) to freeze the bloatware... I think. I heard that's the only way to be able to get further updates without a re-flash down the line.

2) Is there an app I could use/buy that would save all of my settings and apps so I don't have to spend an hour after re-flashing/rooting to reinstall apps and change settings back the way I want them?

Whomever can help me, I'll click the 'thanks' button on your post so hard.

If you like the way your phone is now but would like to reap all the rewards of being rooted, you can just simply root your phone and not install a custom ROM. Your EVO would just be a stock, rooted, EVO.

Yes, you can use Titanium Backup to freeze unwanted bloatware. Read section 2 in "After Rooting" in Rooting for Dummies + Extra's (a great place to start and reference if you're new to rooting) and make sure that all the bloatware you freeze is on this list.....Freezing the wrong things can have negative affects on the way your phone runs.

Outside of making a nandroid backup, there isn't such an app you can purchase that will restore your phone exactly the way you had it, with your icons the way you had them, etc. However, you can use these to save everything else.

Titanium Backup will backup apps and data.

Appbrain will sync your apps with your gmail account so you can login and restore later.

SMS Backup and Restore will backup all your SMS and Call Logs so you can restore at a later time (if you happen to want to flash a custom ROM in the future for example).

If you have specific places for your icons/widgets, I suggest you download Shootme from Appbrain or the Android Market and take screen shots of all the screens you have apps/widgets on. This will save you the headache of trying to remember their placement, should you ever decide to flash a custom ROM in the future.

I hope this helps! :D

What frenchy said is true, but I have two comments:

1) If you intend to keep the exact stock look, you don't need to flash a custom rom, but you will not be able to flash many mods. Most mods require you to have a deodexed rom. Also, before making any changes to /system, make sure you have a nandroid backup. When you have a custom rom, it's easy enough to just reflash it if you forgot to make a nandroid backup. With the stock rom, you can still get your phone back in working condition, but you may have some data loss without a nandroid backup.

2) Titanium backup can backup your settings, too (icon locations, wallpaper, and all), but no app has the ability to restore your widgets. They will show up on all your screens with the the "problem loading widget" error (or whatever it says). In theory, it will backup sms messages too, but people have mixed results with that.
