Anyone know where the stock sms background images are located. I would like to insert some of my own, and remove the originals. Thanks a bunch. Great work being done here gang.

I would assume they are embedded in the APK file. You would have to decompile the stock SMS app using something like apktool, replace the stock images with your own, and recompile the application into an APK file.
This is just an assumption though. I haven't used the stock ROM in over a year and I could be wrong about the images being stored in the apk.
