Help Stop Mail Sync

I very rarely would need to use mail on my HTC One Mini 2 but I do want it for occasional use.

My problem is that it seems to auto refresh about every 24 hours and raises a notification.

Like another user said, I am concerned about what it is doing with my mobile data package.

I have set the peak and off peak sync settings to manual.

I have other apps that need to update in the background so Auto-Syn is on.

Any ideas?
