Root *****Stop the ota from downloading and installing*****

O'k, so I have seen a lot of people asking how to stop the OTA from downloading and installing. One way to accomplish this is by using Titanium Backup to freeze the "updater"

Another way is to put root explorer in, if you don't already have it, and go to system/app and rename "blurupdater_VZW.apk" to bak.

Camphill and I worked on this problem and this is the solution we came up with and it worked for him.

As always, should you are any of your IM force. No, wait, I mean I take no responsibility for you messin up your phone. If you want to try this go ahead and try. If it doesn't work for you, don't shoot the messenger.

if youre rooted, it'll fail anyway...

happened to me.

Yes I know but that isn't the point of my post. The point of my post is to get your phone to stop asking you all together because it's annoying to have that constantly asking and trying to update your phone.

If people were happy with the update just failing all the time then there wouldn't be posts asking how to stop it.

Personally VS, No. My phone never asks me to update and my phone always says it's up to date. I'm working with Camphill to see if this will in fact stop our phones from trying to update.

I have no word from him as of yet. Like I said, I'm guessing at this but it does seem logical because the upgrader is the file that tells your phone to update. So freezing it may work. Then again it may not. I'm waiting on word from Camphill for the final verdict.

Cougar couldn't even land his dam plane on the...

oh wait, wrong cougar...

Now why do I feel like I just dodged a bullet?....lol

Anyway. Camphill informs me this didn't work. So now it's on to find out where I went wrong and continue to track this problem down and hopefully find a solution for it.

Also know as "Back to the drawing board". Trying and failing is what leads to discoveries so I don't feel too bad.....lol

O'k, Camphill and I got this to work. I changed the post above to reflect this. You have to freeze the "updater" and it will stop. I also found that you can go into root explorer and go to system/app and scroll down to blurupdater_VZW.apk and change it from .apk to .bak.

Changing the apk to bak I found over at DroidForums so credit goes to them for this one.

I'm actually wondering now after freezing the updater if freezing the upgrader is even necessary? Nevertheless it worked and I'm proud of myself. Watch me pat myself on the back......lol.

EDIT: I think I broke something......DOH!

EDIT2: Mod can you delete this post? It isn't relevant now.

i see.. after the update install failed, my phone never asked me again. that was my solution to the nagging prompts.

And to confirm, renaming "blurupdater_VZW.apk" to bak works. My phone no longer causes a "failed download" popup message. After I did this upDater no longer exists and upGrader is NOT frozen.

Thanks Cougar.

Glad I could be the one to come up with the answer this time....lol.

Let's not forget Camphill gets some credit too. After all, I'm not getting this issue so I had to test it out on him...Thanks for the help my little Guinea Pig...:p

It's like at Apple where no one knows what the next dept is doing. I think this is an important thread from looking at the GB problems threads. Two is good. I didn't have teh wonderful ***** everywhere and it got missed I guess. LOL. Why someone would want to upgrade is a mystery to me. Froyo runs the same apps.

Now see. I feel like all I did was rip off someone elses work....lol. But GB does run a whole lot better than Froyo did. The only problem we are facing is the OTA can't be rooted. But grabbing TBH's files and flashing them is the way to go if you want root.

Any glitches in GB I'm sure will be addressed in a future patch update. And we do have a few glitches but performance as a whole in GB is far better than Froyo.

I had this problem with the updater as well. My solution to the extremely irritating issue was to revert to my last backup. I was fortunate to have had a backup that was only a day old. Once I restored to that backup, it quit trying to download and install.

Of course as everyone well knows by now, once you select settings, about phone, system updates...

I have tried to rename the blurupdate file in /system/apps with root explorer but it states the file is read only and cant be changed. Even when i went to permissions, it would not let me edit it or change the read only status. Any suggestions?

Thanks
Jake

You have to change the folder to from r/o (read only) to r/w (read or write), rename your file and change the folder back to r/o. With Root Explorer, this means tapping the button at the top. :D

i just had my rooted 340 version download and attempt to install
I renamed the blurupdater to bak and another updater to bak
hope this works untill a good root program comes up for the OTA version
