Help Stopping apps from writing to SD card

I'm using a Galaxy S running 2.2.

How can I stop apps from writing to my SD card?

Background: I have a large collection of audio that exceeds the size of my card and I want to use every byte I can to store music only.

If you're rooted, there are apps that can do that. Be aware that if you deny apps permission to write to the SD card, then they may not work. Have you considered just moving your music collection to the cloud?

I guess I'll just reserve some space on the card for apps, sounds like the safest way to go.
