Stopping messages

Polterry

Newbie
I have Lenovo TAB 2 A7-30H tablet running android 5.0.1. I have made enquiries at a phone site, did not go ahead with anything and now nearly every day I get a pop up message from it. Similarly I have tried an app out, did not want it so deleted it and also getting pop up messages.

How can I stop these pop-ups?

Not a big issue just annoying

What app is producing these messages? You made enquiries at some site using a browser, an app or what? Is that what is giving the messages? And what are the messages (e.g. if they are notifications of a reply to a thread then you change you settings in that forum, if they are spam ads from an app you delete the app).

And an app that has been deleted cannot produce messages, so the question is what is producing those messages? And I might ask where you downloaded the app from: if it was some random website there's a risk that it contained something else that was producing these messages.

In short, we need a bit more information than "I'm getting pop-up messages" to be able to identify the cause, and you need to understand that in order to stop them.

To be specific
1. I used a browser (probably DuckDuckGo maybe Chrome) and went to 3Three site to enquire about sims. Decided not to buy and closed browser. Every day or so when I start up tablet there is a message / link to go to 3 site which I then delete..
2. I went into Playstore and downloaded a thermometer app. When trying to set it up informed I did not have a necessary sensor. Deleted app. Ditto 3 but maybe every 3rd day
I have BT McAfee Security installed

go into your browser's settings, look for notifications, and either turn off notification for the browser completely off or you can search for the website(it should be listed there) and turn it specifically off.

as for your app, make sure you clear cache and data before deleting it. sometimes these will remain on your phone and can be potential for adware to be launched. so i would re-install the thermometer app, clear cache and data for it, and then un-install it.

also i would ditch mcafee, its useless. i have been on android from day 1 and never have used any anti-virus software on my phone. i have never gotten any viruses, been hacked, or had any adware or malware on my phone......just saying.

OK, so what is producing these messages? If they are notifications you can find out by pressing and holding the notification. If not, maybe a screenshot of one of them will help with identifying the cause. And for clarity, if this happens when starting up is it before you unlock the device or after (I'm wondering whether it might be a lockscreen message)? There have been occasional cases of apps that have nothing to do with screen locking pushing ads on a lockscreen (Peel Smart Remote comes to mind).

Maybe clear the browser's cache, just in case the 3 message is due to an ad script that got downloaded when you visited them. As @ocnbrze just wrote, you could disable notifications for the browser completely (I can never see a reason for my browser to notify me of anything).

The worst case is that you have something else installed that's feeding ads, but the fact that they are relatively infrequent and related to your activities makes me doubt that (true adware tends to spam stuff that the adware author is paid to spam). But you do have a very old version of Android there, and I'm not familiar with Lenovo's own software.

Thanks for help. All my browsers have clear cache etc at exit. Cannot find any ref. in notifications or history. Next time I get thermometer app I will try your approach. Regarding 3 just have to keep getting annoyed. Everybody needs a bit of stress in their day
