Storage maximum & imported phones

Hi,

I am wanting to buy a Samsung Galaxy S3 for use in the UK with operator O2. As far as I can see there are 4 variants:
  • 16GB Standard
  • 16GB LTE (i9305 with 2GB of RAM)
  • 32GB
  • 64GB

I am currently trying to decide between these variants. All 4 variants appear to come with a microSD slot which can support cards up to 64GB in size.

Yesterday I spoke to someone at MobiCity who said that Android can only access total storage up to 64GB. What this means in practice is:
  • If I buy a 16GB model and put a 64GB card in it then it will only show 64GB total rather than 80GB
  • If I buy a 32GB model and put a 64GB card in it then it will show only 64GB total rather than 96GB
  • If I buy a 64GB model then it will effectively ignore the SD card

Is this correct? I have not been able to find any website which backs this up. I'm now wondering if this guy was just saying this as a bit of a sales pitch to get me to buy the 32GB model from him. Has anyone had any experience with the above scenarios?

Secondly, I think only the 16GB non-LTE version is officially sold in the UK, all the others are imported phones (e.g. 64GB is coming from Germany). Has anyone had any experience using imported phones? Do you still get Android OS updates? Is there any kind of warranty?

Its complete rubbish. With the OTG cable, you cna connect a 500 GB HDD and it can see all the space.

I'm not sure if you can go above 500 GB. A Test on an S2 got to 2 TB.

The 16GB LTE (GT-i9305) is officially on sale in the UK. Its the LTE version that works on the EE LTE network.

Like the post above says- if the 64GB "ignored" additional SD card space, I think they would ave saved a few bucks & just not included an SD card slot.

Just be aware that some people are reporting an issue with the S3 "killing" SD cards- if I had to do it over again, I might get a 32 rather than 16 GB model. I currently still have 10GB left on mine tho, so no worries as of yet... :)

Please do not spread this BS rumour as there is nothing true to it.

BS rumor? Seems like there are a lot of discussions on several forums about it- to dismiss it as complete BS without good evidence one way or the other doesn't make sense to me.

In my mind, the jury's still out.

If I had been using my SD card in another phone successfully & then put it in a different phone & it crapped out quickly, I would consider the phone as one possible cause of the failure, so I don't think the people making this claim are idiots or trying to smear the S3 in any way, they are just drawing a conclusion that is not supported by enough evidence yet to prove.

Not trying to spread rumors (& remember, I have a 16GB myself, so not trying to upsell anyone for no good reason), just something to consider...

S3 has sold well over 5 million phones and you are telling mr that there is an issue if 50 users all around the world report it?
