Storage space on S3

i recently got a 32gb s3 on upgrade but when i checked the total storage space it read 25.57gb! where is the missing 6.43gb? can any of you confirm whether all s3 are the same or is there a problem with my phone? you will find the reading under settings,storage.

From one side they always round up total space. There "must" be 1 or 2 or 4 or 8 etc etc. So as u can see u "have" 32gb -.

From other side space is partitioned. There is /syatem partirion, /kernel partition or /recovery partition (maybe recovery is with kernel but i dont know).

Well Yes.

Let me start you off. 32GB is not 32GB. Hardware manufactures of Hard Drives. memory cards etc call 1GB=1000MB, 1MB=1000KB and 1KB=1000 Bytes. This is not true where software is concerned.

Software quite rightly calls 1GB=1024MB, 1MB=1024KB etc.

So to work out the full correct size of memory, take the amount in GB and times it by 1000 3 times (to get to Bytes - if you start with MB, times 1000 2 times)

32*1000*1000*1000=32,000,000,000

Take 32,000,000,000 / 1024 / 1024 / 1024 to get true GB = 29.8GB

So in actuality, the device's entire memory is 29.8GB

That is the entire memory available, however this is not all Storage. Part of the memory will be /system and part will be /cache too.

I'm new to Samsung devices so I am not sure on what happens with /data being we have /sdcard as "Internal memory" too.

So this will account for a bit more of that missing space. As for the rest, I'm not really sure. There are hidden partitions galore on Samsungs for recovery, boot etc etc...

That 29.8GB was never all going to be yours to play with.

It's normal, My 16GB S3 comes with 11.35 free space.

its the same as if you buy a 1TB hard disk you will never get 1TB of free space, this is to do with the overhead on the drive as previously mentioned file partition(s).

In this case yes, in part. But for a 1TB drive, not so....

Predominantly its that hardware manufacturers measure a MB, GB etc smaller than it actually is so they fit more of these fake sizes into the same space, making it marketable as bigger than it actually is. See my earlier post.
