Straight Talk not working with ATT HTC Inspire 4G

arustik1

Newbie
Just bought a used HTC Inspire (previous ATT phone). Now I have a Straight Talk SIM that I inserted into the phone, after taking it out of another phone the mom was using temporarily and tried adjusting the APN settings using the Tweakker app. The app failed to connect my internet and mms. Voice and text are working just fine.

I also tried changing APN using this method:

"Hook the phone up to a WiFi connection. Set up a google account on the phone if you haven't already. Go to your market. Download APN Backup And Restore. Use that app to backup the existing APN addresses to your SD card(in the event you need to restore it later if you decide to sell the phone). Then delete the APNs(they can interfere with your new ST APN).

Go to Settings>Wireless & Networks>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names.....press the menu button on your home row(the appearance and position may vary depending on the phone...consult the user's manual if it's not obvious). You should now have the option to create a new APN.

Fill in the following fields(note that this info creates TWO APNs). Do not change the defaults in the other fields.

First APN

Name
HOME

APN
att.mvno

Leave everything else alone EXCEPT the bottom selection that says:

APN type (here you must enter the following)
default,supl

Then save, next choose to add another APN
make it look like this:

Name
MMS

APN
att.mvno

skip down to
MMSC
http://mmsc.cingular.com

MMS proxy
proxy.mvno.tracfone.com

MMS port
80

skip to:
APN type (enter the following)
mms
THEN SAVE

Then select the APN(you won't be able to select the MMS one....this is normal)
Then reboot the phone.

Done.

Note: If you experience issues with MMS use the above info to create just one APN. Just be sure to leave the APN type blank or whatever the default is. Like this.....

Name
Straight Talk

APN
att.mvno

skip down to
MMSC
http://mmsc.cingular.com

MMS proxy
proxy.mvno.tracfone.com

MMS port
80

THEN SAVE

Then select it and reboot."

Nothing is working. I've spent half of my Sunday on this phone, and still do not have data or MMS working.

Should I root the phone? I'm out of options at this point.

Try setting it to use "2G only" and see what happens; I think the high speed data freqs are different on the carriers.

{edit: I mean between the ATT phone and the (possible) TMO backend of Straight Talk: "the GSM side makes use of either T-Mobile's or AT&T's GSM networks."}

Thanks. Is this setting also under APN?

Depending on the ROM it's something like:
Settings | Wireless | Mobile Data

Definitely not under APN. I haven't run a stock ROM in so long I don't actually remember.

Thanks for this. I'm going to look into this today. Keeping my fingers crossed that it works.

The only settings I have under wireless is:

data roaming - mine is not checked
apns
network operators
enable always on mobile data - mine is checked

I cranked up a stock Gingerbread ROM to check. On mine it's under:

Menu | Settings | Wireless & Networks | Mobile Networks | Use Only 2G networks

If you can go
Menu | Settings | About Phone
and tell us about the android version / build / software it lists we might be able to get further down the road. Might even be a stock Froyo ROM on there where I think it might be different.

Thanks for this again.

I do not have the "Use Only 2G Networks" feature.

Here is what I have in "About Phone":

Android Version: 2.3.3
Build: 2.47.502.7 CL93396 release-keys
Software: 2.47.502.7

I can also list (if needed):

Baseband Version
Kernel Version
Browser Version

I think 2.3.x are gingerbread.

Maybe toggle 2/3G with an app?

You may be able to set "GSM Only" manually, as in the froyo link above. Or this thread may help figure out where the roadblock is.

I still suspect it is trying to connect to 3g or other mobile high speed and it's a freq mismatch. I do think getting it to 2G (somehow) will enable data, even if slower than what you want.

I honestly just want data and MMS to work, don't really care about speed. I am getting frustrated though.

I'll look through the links. But think I should download a app to toggle 2/3G first?

Yeah, try it. Should be quick and easy to test.

I'm with you on the speed thing. For my purposes I can survive on 2G nicely.

Today I downloaded 2G-3G OnOff which didn't do anything.

I then downloaded 3G Toggle which has a bunch of options and I don't know what to choose.

It has:

Legacy mode (disable mobile data access using the API) - unchecked

Include MMS access points (also enable/disable MMS access points when disable or enable data accessibility - checked

Get State Workaround (apple a workaround for some ICS devices that has problems returning the mobile data availability - checked

Followed by a bunch of notification and sound options

Can you recommend anything here? If I can't get this fixed, I will just end up selling the phone unfortunately.

Thank you!

arustik1,
what's your definition of "fully functionality of phone" ??
2G, 3G, or...? and does *everything* (data and MMS ) work like you want it?
...do you have any speed...?
The reason I'm asking all of this: my current carrier plan is up in less than a week and I'm seriously thinking about Straight Talk. The only thing I'm not crazy about is it doesn't work in Europe (when I travel there)...
TIA,
LodiRon

I've been with Straight talk for a yr now using the inspire. I use a single apn leaving out the proxy. Works great for me I live in a edge only area but when I do get to a 4g area it works like I'm on my home wifi fast and quick.

I ended up calling ST and they were able to reset my IP for fully functionality of phone!
Hi, I just got ST and I have the inspire from at&t. they reset the APN settings and I now have internet but I am not able to use MMS. They told me that it didn't work with the inspire phone? I was also wondering what the IP is?

Here's what I use with no issues with mms

Name= Straight Talk
APN= att.mvno
Proxy= "Leave Blank"
Port= 80
MMSC= http://mms.cingular.com
MMS Proxy= 66.209.11.33
MMS Port= 80
Leave everything else as is save, do restart or toggle airplane mode

Some have said that if you leave the original att apn and just add the StraightTalk apn that it causes issues.

I used apn backup & restore form play store to back up original att apn saved it to sd card then deleted the att apn and added Straight Talk apn. have just 1 single apn

I have heard that once you backup the att apn then delete it then restore the att apn that when restored it can then be edited. But I have not tried that method Have thought about trying it but what I use works so Why try.

Hope this helps

I have changed my apn settings and am able to use data and I can receive MMS but I still can send pictures for some reason? Any other suggestions?

Some people on there renewal date are losing data with the att apn if you check straight talk site they have a new att apn setting it is "picture below" I'm still using the the old apn, it works still for me.

oldvsnew_zps7e79839f.jpg

note this new apn is the same as net10's att apn setting (check for yourself) so the question is? Does this apn mean you only get 1.5gb of data with this new Straight talk apn? only time will tell

Im using the inspire but it tell me i have no service even changing my apn setting....i have 2 other apn setting on my phone thcat are locked how do i delete those

I just switched my ATT HTC Inspire to straight talk. I cannot get the phone to be connected to mobile internet and be able to get picture messages. I can either have one or the other. Any Help?
