Help Strange keyboard feature, how to turn it off?

Hey there, theres some kind of feature on my keyboard for the galaxy nexus that is causing me to have to retype things several times. It occurs when I hit backspace a lot, an example of the problem is as follows:

I type: the quick brown fox

I want to delete brown fox, what I end up with is:

the quickbrown or perhaps, the quickbrownbrown

I want to turn this off, I dont know what its called or how to access it. this is also the default keyboard
