Strange thing happened when deleting contacts...

I bought the Ultra for myself and am giving my Prevail to my son. He doesn't need all of my phone contacts, so I started deleting the ones he won't use from the Prevail with its own SD card. What's crazy is that when I was done deleting, now the same contacts show up on BOTH phones! That is to say on the Ultra I have only HIS needed contacts and NONE of mine. UGH! What did I do wrong? The Prevail isn't deactivated (if that's the right word), I simply went online and updated the phone to the Ultra. I've tried swapping SD cards between the 2 phones, but still have lost all of MY contacts. Helpppp....

There are a number of ways to set up your contacts on android, but it sounds like you had yours set up as google contacts when you were using your old phone. (SD cards have nothing to do with contacts on android).

If you use google contacts, then your contact list will be kept in sync between gmail.com and any phones associated with that account. I'm presuming that when you gave the phone to your son, you didn't log out of your gmail account and into his. That meant everything you deleted was deleted from your google account and your new phone.

If you log onto the gmail website, and go to contacts (top left), do you see all of your son's contacts now? If so, you'll need to roll back the changes to your contact list: https://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=1069522

Then we can go over the different ways you can set up the two phones properly. :)

Oooooookay, it was driving me nuts trying to figure out how in the world they got deleted from one phone to another...lol. I'm in the process of fixing the mess now, thank you very much for the link. Yes, I do still see my sons' contacts...lemme get this done and will be back to report. ;)

Wow, that was too easy! :D I haven't given the phone to my son just yet, making him use his old Motorola Clutch till I get mine right...lol. Properly set up each phone? That'll be a first and very nice for each of us. Thanks!

Also, I'm not sure whether he'll go with the daily or monthly unlimited, so we haven't changed the Prevail over to his phone number yet either. Will probably do it this weekend as he lives a couple of hours away and I want to help him in person with what I know about it up to this point.

Well, it's not really as complicated as it sounds. Essentially all you need to do is remove your gmail account from the phone and add his. I believe, with gignerbread, it's as easy as going to Settings >> Accounts and Sync >> Clicking on your gmail account >> and hitting 'Remove Account'. Then you can add his from that same screen. Your new phone is already set up so you don't need to touch that.

That will keep your contacts/emails and so on off his phone :p

On older versions of android you could only remove the account by doing a factory reset, which was a pain, but I don't believe that's required any more on 2.3.

It looks as if I'll have to do a factory wipe on the Prevail cause it's not wanting to remove the account. I guess maybe we'll have to do that when we get his phone all switched over to his number, etc.

Well, everything is done, all switched over and running good. Now I don't have to listen to him crying about how bad he wants my Prevail cause it's HIS baby now...lol. :D Thanks to you guys for all your help!
